5.0 out of 5 stars Non-Stop Thrill, 4 April 2006
This review is from: The Secret Service (Paperback)
If The Secret Policeman was part-mystery, part-thriller, there is no doubt about The Secret Service: it is a thrill-a-page-a-minute non-stop page-turner. Picking up ten years after the previous novella left off, The Secret Service sees the return of Captain Jackson, now retired to the Peak District after several years with the South African Secret Service. But his past sins and skills come to haunt him as he is recruited by the CIA to wash some dirty laundry for them.
The pace is breakneck and the story moves from Buxton to Colchester, Aberdeen, London, Dublin, and Barbados before coming to rest back in England. Once again their is a characteristic McGregor twist in the final chapter, although not as shocking as his last.
This time the short, novella format really suits the story, and the characterisation, pace, and plot are compelling from beginning to end. Some interesting references to the STASI for Cold War buffs as well.
