"Clare Beaton's fabric illustrations once again infuse a tale for the nursery set with exuberant energy"

About the Author

On good days, Stella Blackstone lives east of the sun and west of the moon. On less good days, she lives at the bottom of a well. She finds ideas in all of these places and turns them into songs, poems and rhymes. She has read and written poetry for as long as she can remember, and her favourite books include Louis Untermeyer?s A Child's Treasury of Poetry, which was a constant companion throughout her childhood, Paolo Coelho's The Alchemist, everything by T.S. Eliot, and William Buck's translation of The Ramayana. She lives in southwest England, and enjoys walking and working in her garden as well as doing nothing whenever she has the chance. Clare Beaton worked at the BBC for eight years, illustrating on many children's television programmes. She is now highly sought-after creator of handcrafted children's picture books. Clare has had nearly fifty books published, including One Moose, Twenty Mice (Barefoot Books, 1998) and Mother Goose Remembers (Barefoot Books, 2000), both of which have attracted considerable praise. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Paperback
Endearing cover opens to 32 high quality shiny pages with super 'collage-type' illustrations, from Clare Beaton, making it not too easy to spot the seahorse and where he is hiding on the relevant 2-page spreads!
This super book is further enhanced by basic general knowledge pages about 'Coral Reefs', 'Creatures of the Coral Reef' and 'Secrets of Seahorses', at the back.

'Can you see the seahorse as he swims through the mysterious world of the coral reef?
You will meet all kinds of colourful sea creatures and learn lots of fascinating facts about them as you follow this easy-to-read rhyming adventure.'

Example of text:-

'I saw a secret seahorse deep down in the sea.
I tried to swim beside him. He was too quick for me.
He swam past reefs of coral, with colours flower bright.
He swam past flickering fishes, then disappeared from sight....'

This book has very attractive illustrations which are a mixture of embroidery and fabric collage using beads, sequins, etc. It's something a bit different from the usual children's illustrations - it would make a lovely present. The rhyming text is about searching under the sea for a seahorse, so the pictures have various underwater scenes including a lovely one with a mermaid. Like all the other Barefoot books I have seen, this is a lovely book to share with a child.

I'd give this book 5 stars for the wonderful Clare Beaton illustrations alone, but the text lets it down. It's very clunky and extremely hard to read aloud. It's intended as a simple verse, but doesn't scan well and it has a lot of awkward conjunctions that make it a bit of a chore to read aloud to a small child. We just look for all the fishes and sea creatures. I love the creative use of fabrics and haberdashery, as always with CB's illustrations.

My 18 month old daughter absolutely loves searching for the Secret Seahorse on every page. This book is a great way to introduce your little ones to sea creatures and is definetely a beautiful book you'll want to keep on you shelves.

This is a board book which makes it durable and the pictures are lovely, but I mistakenly thought there were areas of materials for my boy to touch, but there isn't. In the pictures different textures etc. have been used, but none of them are touchable which is a shame as my 14 month old loves the touch and feel books. Simple story with lots of pages which is good.

My daughter has been reading this book in nursery (she will be 3 in Nov), and she knows every single word, so I had to buy the book to see it for myself. She absolutely loves it and reads it about 10 times a day - a great liitle book to get them started and very colourful.

This is a lovely book - the illustrations are unusual as they are made up from materials and sequins. The seahorse is hidden on each page. There are lots of different sea creatures - so lots to point out and talk about. Would make a great gift. Lovely!
