Product Description

CD Description
The members of this Pennsylvania foursome have been playingtogether since high school, and it shows in the empathic communication that exists between them; fans may hear SECRET SAMADHI as simply a followup to the 1994 pop smash THROWING COPPER, but it has the strength of years of music-making behind it. Bass, drums, guitars and vocals operate in perfect conjunction with each other, creating a wholly interdependent web of sound. This is music as sincere as '90s rock gets. While singer Ed Kowalczyk's heart-on-a-sleeve vocals are slightly more subdued here than on previous albums, the overall approach is still earnest enough to avoid the pratfalls of alternative rock postmodernism that mire so many contemporary guitar bands.
The songs on SECRET SAMADHI utilise a stripped-down approach that features Kowalczyk's voice prominently, with guitars alternating between moody folk-rock jangle and overdriven grunge. Throughout the album, drummer Chad Gracey and bassist Patrick Dahlheimer work together to provide a ferocious, primal rhythmic assault that prevents even Kowalczyk's headiest lyrics from getting too introspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twelve superb tracks of emotional and powerful rock., 8 Feb 2006
By Chris Hall "Dreadlocksmile" (Cardiff, Wales) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
In 1997 the Pennsylvanian four-piece rock outfit ‘Live’ released their third album ‘Secret Samadhi’. The release followed their multi-million selling album “Throwing Copper”. The group have again produced a finely crafted, well written, creative and mature rock album packed with a diverse range of styles and techniques.

Including the usual emotional and, in places, spiritual, rock tracks, this album was another firm step in the direction the band have been moving in. With such tracks as “Lakini’s Juice” which delivers a broken, chunky riff that constructs the main backbone of the track, to the haunting and deeply atmospheric “Gas Hed Goes West,” the album is as diverse and moving as anything they have done before. If you liked the album “Throwing Copper,” then this album is in much the same vein. Twelve proficiently performed and well-written tracks that deliver a rare depth of emotion.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Addition to Your Collection, 28 Dec 1999
By A Customer
A very good follow-up album to Throwing Copper. Some very powerful tracks open the CD, Rattlesnake in particular. Follow this with some mellow tracks like Turn My Head, which will stick in your mind, and finish off with the strange, like Gas Head Goes West. All-in-all a very good mix on a single album.

This Album needs more than one listen to be appreciated and after three or four goes it'll stay in your CD player for some time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real grower. Needs a few listens, but well worth it., 24 Oct 2001

Not as accessible as Throwing Copper but a fine follow up with a plethora of great songs.
I initially played this a couple of times then put it to one side until I saw them in concert
(highly recommended).
The production on the CD makes the songs seem very samey on first listen, but there is in fact a great variety of pace and tone. The slower songs (Graze and Ghost )are among the guys best work and Freaks is another great rock song.
Try it, you might like it.
