Did not think this was the usual John Sandford book. Quite hard to get into. Definitely not a 'page turning' thriller.

Secret Prey never stops. From the murder in the first chapter we are introduced to several suspects and the story spins around them, keeping the cards close to Sandford's chest until the final third. The plot draws in characters from Davenport's past as he becomes more involved in the corporate killing. The plot is straightforward, and very traditional for Sandford, however his usual frenetic style comes in to effect once Lucas gets close to the killer, creating an enjoyable blend of entertaining narrative and action. Not the highlight of the Prey series, however a solid enough entry.

Lucas Davenport is back in this decidedly different adventure for our gung-ho hero. The Chairman of a bank has just been shot dead during a hunting trip and it looks like murder. Could one of the four other executives on the trip be to blame? Davenport must use all of his detective skills to uncover a ruthless killer who will do anything to promote their own agenda.

This Davenport thriller is significantly alternative to the others I have read in the series as it is more of a whodunit. Usually Sandford informs us who the killer is at the beginning of the book and the enjoyment is from watching him get closer and closer to the killer. However in 'Secret Prey' we are left guessing till near the end. This is a fantastic way of adding to the tension and I felt anyone could have done it.

'Secret Prey' is probably the best of the Prey series I have read as Sandford has successfully added true mystery to his thrilling crime stories. I advise anyone to read this series and build up slowly to this book. It is always a joy when a long running collection of books continues to entertain and surprise.
