meticulous and well-written, 13 May 2009
This review is from: The Secret Life of the Universe: The Quest for the Soul of Science (Paperback)
This book is meticulously researched, readable and clearly argued but as an agnostic, trained in science and medicine, I didn't expect to take anything from it. I was pleasantly surprised therefore to find it interesting and challenging.
Corzine explores the edges of the believable and discusses areas where scientific fact merges into theory and beyond. And she looks at the spiritual and supernatural world too. The fringes. Sure, there were areas which - for me - were beyond belief but much of the book explores the fascinating realms that mainstream scientists tend to shy away from. I found that refreshing and sometimes inspiring.
The discussion on the inseparability of mind, body and spirituality was wise, well-argued and thought-provoking. Here in the West most of us live in spiritual poverty; we have all we need materially but things aren't all we need. In my practise as a doctor, all I can do is diagnose and discuss disease. Only occasionally can I offer effective treatment. I have nowhere else to go when my pharmacopeia fails me. Corzine though argues that there are other ways to health - both individual and universal - drawing on resources beyond the pharmacy and industrial gizmos.

Wide horizons, 21 Oct 2008
This review is from: The Secret Life of the Universe: The Quest for the Soul of Science (Paperback)
Amy Corzine has covered an enormous range of topics here, from mysticism through medicine to ecology and technology. Packed with both references and anecdotes, the Secret Life is a great introduction to alternative understandings of our place in space and time. Dawkins and his followers have in recent years been offering incisive - and currently fashionable - criticism of more subtle dimensions of experience; anyone who yet suspects that there might be "something in it" may find stimulus and food for thought in these pages. A good place to start exploring the other side of life and death.
