Product Description

This book is a sequel to "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea". A

party of British adventurers, who had been ballooning, but whose trip

had ended by being cast away on a Pacific island, have various setbacks

due to both pirates and convicts who had escaped from jails in mainland

Australasia. They realise that at times there appears to be some kind

of entity that is looking after them.

This entity proves to be none other than Captain Nemo whom the reader is

expected to have met before with his submarine "Nautilus" in "20,000

Leagues". Captain Nemo has been living in a huge cave inside the very

volcanic island, where he is surrounded with immense wealth. But he is

nearing the end of his life. We are present at his end. But what

happens after that is of great interest.

About the Author

Jules G. Verne was born in Nantes, the former capital of Brittany, France. Verne went to Paris to study law but began writing stories and working in theatre as well. When Verne's father discovered that his son was writing rather than studying law, he promptly withdrew his financial support. His wife then encouraged him to pursue his writing, and he became acquainted with Pierre-Jules Hetzel, an important French publisher. Hetzel also helped improve Verne's writings.

More About the Author

Jules Verne was born in Nantes in 1828, the eldest of five children
of a prosperous family claiming French, Breton, and Scottish
ancestry. His early years were happy apart from an unfulfilled
passion for his cousin Caroline. Literature always attracted him
and while taking a law degree in Paris he wrote a number of plays.
His first book, about a journey to Scotland, was not published
during his lifetime. However, in 1862, Five Weeks in a Balloon was
accepted by the publisher Hetzel, becoming an immediate success.
It was followed by Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Twenty
Thousand Leagues under the Seas, Around the World in Eighty Days,
and sixty other novels, covering the whole world (and below
and beyond). Verne himself travelled over three continents, before
suddenly selling his yacht in 1886. Eight of the books appeared after
his death in 1905--although they were in fact written partly by his
son, Michel.

What more can be said? The author is a classic and "must read" - the descriptive writing sucks you into the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is really the second half of "The Mysterious Island" 25 Mar 2011

I had thought this might be a sequel to "Mysterious Island," but it's just the second part of that novel. I suggest you download the free copy of "Mysterious Island" and get both parts together.

That said, this has always been a favorite of mine.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is the last third of "Mysterious Island" 23 Mar 2012
By LIBRARIAN - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Jules Verne wrote his wonderful novel "The Mysterious Island" in 3 parts, each published separately while this lengthy novel was a work-in-progress. This is only part 3 (which, being incomplete, is why I gave it only one star), translated by Kingston. I heartily recommend you read the entire novel (which rates five stars) and is also a public domain freebie. In fact, there are TWO such versions in the Kindle Store, the British translation by Kingston (search by: Kindle free books Verne Mysterious Island) and an American translation by White (search by: Kindle free books Verne Ile Mysterieuse. English). It might even be fun to read and compare both of them -- but either one will give you the full story in all 3 parts.

I did not read this as a child and I missed a great read! A sort of 'Swiss Family Robinson' without children. Wonderful book!
