I bought this book after reading the book titled, "The Wilheim Canaris Mystery." I was hoping to expand on my knowledge of German resistence during World War 2. This book does provide many interesting pieces of information but there is one major flaw. The writers believe that to understand the main character, it requires an examination of the history of Germany.

At times i found it easy to get lost in what they were trying to say. All the chapters relating specifically to Stauffenberg were good and flowed easily. The chapters that tried to deal with the rise of Prussia and Germany and of Stauffenbergs ancesters seemed a chore to read. They didn't flow and the style of writing differed from the chapters that dealt with the German Army of WW2.

To sum up-the book does have some valuable material, but gets lost in what to me was a serious digression of the point.

A tour de force and one of the most dynamic, intellectual and historically correct accounts (with the full support of the Stauffenberg's, first hand witnesses & collaborators I hasten to add) that perfectly epitomises the life and courage of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. His remarkable compassion towards those less fortunate than him; even during the height of conflict, coupled with his life and unwavering courage to stand against those who sought to destroy the very morality of man is evident. This is one of the most remarkable books I've read....and I am well read! I only hope it forms part of the 'to do' reading list for any budding historian or officer (military) cadet.

I loved this book because it taught me so much that I just never knew about the history of Germany and Stauffenberg's philosophy of life. I also enjoyed learning about Goethe. It is far more than just a history of the plot to kill Hitler and all the better for it .
