Lucy, the book's narrator, has to choose whether to be friends with Rafaella (also known as Earwig), or the cool girls.

This is a book that deals well with real feelings and real children - the good guys aren't always good, the bad guys are typical children - thoughtless, rather than malicious, which in no way changes the consequences of their acts.

If you want a book about inclusion that isn't rose-tinged and over-simplified, try this one. Read it before you give it to a child, though - it's not all hugs and puppies.

Many childhood issues are bought sharply into focus in this touching book. The problems associated with peer pressure and allowing yourself to be different and stand up for what is right are masterfully handled and made easy for a child to understand. The book could raise many questions from it's child reader so I would advise that a parent also read the piece to be able to answer them effectively.

Secret Friends by Elizabeth Laird is a warm, touching book. Lucy, who wants to be in the popular gang at school, secretly befriends Raphaella, the school outcast. Raphaella isn't popular or pretty, but Lucy still comes to like her a lot and treasure their friendship. Until one day, the teasing at school gets too much for Raphaella and she goes into hospital to have an operation on her ears...
