Product Description

Synopsis
The exposition of a new theory of mind called the 'twin-data-stream' theory.

From the Author
not just a book but also a scientific theory
My book is not just a book. It is also a scientific theory, which I have called the "Twin-Data-Stream Theory", concerned with perhaps the most important and intriguing subject of our time: the nature of consciousness. Although most readers seem to find the work well-written, clearly far greater implications than purely literary ones inhere in such a book. The proof, or disproof, of its claims could have an effect on many branches of human culture and activity. I am naturally convinced that my theory is true but realize that my conviction is not proof. The theory, however, is very susceptible to scientific verification. Its central claim concerns the nature of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and this could be initially proved or disproved at minimal expense and in quite a short time. However, I am not in a position to undertake or to commission such work myself. I therefore appeal to any scientist interested in the mind-brain complex to read my book and, if they agree that it deserves testing, help me to achieve it. this is NOT an appeal for funds but for assistance in getting access to the help and facilities needed for a modest programme of sleep-laboratory tests. I suspect that many brain scientists, if they read "The Secret of Consciousnes" with an open mind, will be sympathetic to this request. I may say that my theory is fascinating in itself. But far more important is the fact that if it tests true it will have profound implications for, in particular, the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, including schizophrenia. It is also (as, to my surprise, I found myself) somewhat alarming in that it seems to show that human beings are closer to being electro-chemical automata than has been previously realized. The book therefore includes a chapter called "Towards a Philosophical Context" tht may help readers to assimilate some of the implications of the theory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Appears to summarise recent research but does far more...., 20 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Paul Ableman's book seems in large parts to be a good, clear summary of recent search into the human brain and in particular in to the functions of sleep. Paul however formed his theory over a number of years, and whilst he has read such rearch came up with an explantion for phenomena he had observed in his own behaviour quite independantly of it. The author is correct in his own review, this book is crying out for proper scientific testing. However I do feel that as a non scientist Paul has written something quite different from scientist's books on similar subject matter. Paul is fearless in his extrapolations, he looks at the data not with a scientist, cautious eyes but as one who has spent many years examining human behaviour (particulally his own) in imaginative and creative detail. Paul Ableman has written something to make all of us say "so maybe thats why I..." He now needs scientific backup for his theories to become more than just interesting speculation.
