With more twists than a corkscrew, this memoir won't be what you expect.

4.0 out of 5 stars The spirit of adventure lives! 21 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Laura Watts tells it like it is, warts and all, in this candid account of her adventurous year down under. With so much of the world now explored, adventure has taken on a new flavour with the young people of today, but it nevertheless takes courage to fly to the other side of the globe without on the ground support and get stuck in. That approach, of course, is what made Australia the country it is and Laura fitted right in, although not without a few tense moments along the way.
Her candid descriptions take away a lot of the myth about young people travelling yet she makes clear the risks and problems that may need to be faced and dealt with. At times laugh-out-loud funny, her descriptions of life in backpacker hostels are vivid and entertaining. One feels the people she met come to life as she shares events with them, describing many of these and the variety of jobs she takes in intimate detail.
To some her approach to life might seem slightly shocking, even frivolous; others will say "I would never dare do that," but her vitality shines through and she truly demonstrates what having the spirit of adventure means when you are just twenty something in the modern world.
Written in a easy to read style, Laura's openness about her life and attitudes is both and encouragement for those who would follow in her footsteps and an intimate sharing of her own excitement and enjoyment of life. Whilst recounting many of the pitfalls that can beset a backpacker in a foreign land, her story is also uplifting and hopeful.
This is a book all young adventurers should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kept me turning those pages! 27 Feb. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book really did keep me fascinated - I read it cover to cover over two long nights, struggling to believe all the antics the author got up to!
She certainly isn't afraid of her sexuality, and it oozes out of the pages of the book - it's a racy, risque memoir, and not for the faint-hearted!
As she travelled around Australia and New Zealand, Laura tried a bit of everything, from rafting to paragliding to outback adventuring - and it was always fascinating to see what happened as a result. She met and interacted with so many people on the trip - to read the book is to get a great insight into the often friendly, sometimes weird, always thrilling and occasionally downright scary world of the backpacker! I'd done a little of this myself, and can vouch for how bizarre the experiences can be - from stalkers to passionate romances, adventures to accidents of serendipity - it's all here, and told in such a way that you can't doubt for one second that this is The Truth. The whole truth - and the no-holds-barred truth!
A very entertaining read.

Read this on my Kindle on the lonnnng plane journey from UK to Oz a couple of days ago. Interesting to read about Laura's exploits. Looking forward to my own adventure over the next year. Bring it on!!!
P.S. This is SO cheap on Amazon - if you're interested in Australia, New Zealand, backpacking, hostel-life, the freedom of travel, relationships etc you'd be mad not to buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok.....could have been better 14 Jun. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this to gain a bit of an insight of the backpacker experience in Australia. While it did keep me entertained, it should be noted that the author has written this in a format of a diary and she is in her late teens. While her adventures can be entertaining and funny at times, there is an equal amount of complaining when things don't go her way, particularly with her boyfriend. I can't blame the author for not having developed a great style of writing as this appears to be her first effort.... but sometimes I found myself cringing at how badly written some parts were.

Overall a good effort. If you can look past the shortcomings above you'll have an entertaining read.
