a lot of people follow the crowd and list artists such as aretha franklin as their favourite female singer. randy crawford is every bit as good. she was born to sing. she never has to force her voice it is just a pure natural sound. i saw her at the barbican in london performing with the london symphony orchestra. no backing voals, just her. she blew me and hundreds of others away (including the conductor). this has to be her finest hour (secret combination). if you are into soul music then you have to have this in your collection. from first to last every song is magical.

In fact 1981 was extremely rich in exceptionally good soul albums.
Quincy Jones' "The Dude", Luther Vandross' "Never Too Much", Chaka Khan's "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me" all came in 1981. As well as this quiet storm masterpiece from Randy Crawford. You'll find no weak songs here. Almost every track deserves to be a single.
Perfectly played and sung this album sounds really "delicious".
I just wonder why this album didn't resonate in the States. Gladly it was a huge hit in Britain.

I have really enjoyed this album, it is full of meaningful (to me) songs. It also makes good back ground music.

This is just so great. Randy is in fine voice, Tommy LiPuma at the helm, you just can't go wrong. It's actually better than her greatest hits bizarrely enough. You Might Need Somebody will shock the teenies by just how funky and full of 'tude the original was.

Randy has a very distinctive, warm & emotional voice that can make almost any song sound great.

Standout tracks on this album include:

1. You Might Need Somebody - uptempo, puncy with telling lyrics.

2. Rainy Night In Georgia - a lovely, moving version of a classic made famous by Brook Benton, amongst others.

5. You Bring The Sun Out - another 'soultry' version of a well known song. The British reggae singer, Janet "Silly Love Songs" Kay did a good version too.

6. Rio De Janeiro Blues - nice, loose almost jazzy feel. Reall;y conjures up a picture of warm, sunny places!

7. Secret Combination - another catchy, mid tempo song with a loose feel to it

To be honest, just looking at those tracks makes me want to play the album right now!

Long been a fan and the subtle silky tone of Randy Crawford is simply unmistakeable. This is best served like a fine red wine, at room temp and with good company.
