About the Author

Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) called his spiritual philosophy 'anthroposophy', meaning 'wisdom of the human being'. As a highly developed seer, he based his work on direct knowledge and perception of spiritual dimensions. He initiated a modern and universal 'science of spirit', accessible to anyone willing to exercise clear and unprejudiced thinking. From his spiritual investigations Steiner provided suggestions for the renewal of many activities, including education (both general and special), agriculture, medicine, economics, architecture, science, philosophy, religion and the arts. Today there are thousands of schools, clinics, farms and other organizations involved in practical work based on his principles. His many published works feature his research into the spiritual nature of the human being, the evolution of the world and humanity, and methods of personal development. Steiner wrote some 30 books and delivered over 6000 lectures across Europe. In 1924 he founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world.

When this lecture cycle was given it was a shocking insight into the secret groups that manipulated European and world society and their use of occult groups and techniques. Those who know Steiner will understand that he was a significant philosopher and scientist, an innovative and highly influential educator who triggered a worldwide movement with many hundreds of acclaimed schools, a highly praised architect and artist and a founding father of organic farming, amongst just a few exploits. he is also widely regarded as the most influential 20th-century figure in the world of spiritual self development. He was also a serious historian using his own specially developed techniques to assist. Here he discusses secret brotherhoods, and the psychology of the soul. This will be of most interest to people with an esoteric interest

For a long time, I assumed that the Anthroposophists were a Green, mushy, hippie group involved in organic farming, alternative schooling and perhaps hash smoking. I knew that their founder was named Rudolf Steiner (almost common knowledge in Sweden), and that they believed in reincarnation. And yes, they like Schiller and Goethe.

I did not know that Steiner was raving mad.

At the very least, Steiner's book "Secret brotherhoods and the mystery of the human double" could make that impression on an outsider...

The book contains translations of seven lectures by Steiner held in Switzerland in 1917. Steiner makes the following claims. From 1841 to 1879, a battle raged in heaven between good angels and other angels turned evil. In 1879, the archangel Michael emerged victorious. The fallen angels were cast down on Earth, where they have roamed freely ever since. At birth, all human beings are automatically possessed by an evil, ahrimanic spirit. This is the "double" of the book's title. The souls of humans who die a violent death receive dangerous esoteric knowledge. Secret brotherhoods want to tap this knowledge with the help of mediums who communicate with the souls of the murdered dead. Sometimes, the secret societies murder people to speed up the process. Materialism is a conspiracy of secret lodges who don't really believe in it themselves. They want humanity at large to be materialist, since souls of dead materialists will roam the material world, where they can be easily controlled by the black magicians of the secret brotherhoods. These are the "Western" brotherhoods. There are also "Eastern" brotherhoods who capture the astral bodies of dead people, and give these to demons, whom they expect humanity to worship.

A call to wake up! 27 Jan 2010

This book is helpful in empowering the mind to see not only corrupt political, social and economic agendas, but to unmask the hidden spiritual motives behind them.

Anybody with a critical mind can see that so many aspects of the world seem to be created by design to dumb us down and instill in us hopelessness.

However, what if the masters of the planet had in mind something more than ecomomic and political power? That the above forms of power were a material manifestation of a spiritual agenda to which only a small number of priestly initiates are privy?

This book is a truly eye-opening work which inspires the reader to go beyond normal intellectual analysis and reach down into the depths of the soul where the wholistic faculties of our being reside. Those faculties which will enable us to use the evil sprits of opposition as a stimulus to awaken our consciousness rather than plunging further into the abyss.

A Personal Response After Reading "Secret Brotherhoods" 12 Oct 2008
By Andrew James - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Initially, I was fascinated and intrigued in a gothic, horror story sort of way. As Steiner's narrative continues to sink deeper into my soul it feels to me as if the pictures and concepts he provides could be of importance for modern magicians and occultists.

Not all modern magicians believe in the Inner Lodge mythos. I used to be skeptical of the glamour of an occult war myself. But I have to confess this Anthroposophical telling of the story of an occult war between secret groups of magicians, combined with observing the global climate crisis, financial meltdown and US political show had a profoundly motivating effect upon the way I do my personal spiritual practice. Elements of these lectures paint a scarey picture, and not one I would recommend to people just beginning their inner work. Yet, perhaps that gut-level push is part of what motivated me to kick it all up a notch.

My study of these lectures seems to have constructed an occult-analytic lens which helps me perceive outer events as part of a deeper set of spiritual meanings. I don't fully accept everything in this collection and there is much I don't comprehend. However I would recommend Steiner in general to modern occultists and magicians as providing thought-tools and conceptual methods for dealing with the practicalities of supersensible contact.

"Secret Brotherhoods" in particular, offers magicians shimmering threads of the same mythos of Inner Plane Adepts as woven by Mathers, Crowley, Fortune and others laid out in an eldrich, darkly familiar pattern.

Steiner talks about the Black Lodge 23 Feb 2006
By Ryan Kouroukis - Published on
Format: Paperback
Well folks, here's a rarity you don't hear about very anthroposophist speaking openly about the practices of secret cults, groups and societies of a negative nature!

His words are still immensely relevent to our modern day predicament. If not more so, then back in the early 1900's.

This series of lectures fills an important gap in Steiner's works/talks, but absolutely necessary for those serious in the esoteric to know about. Another good source who talks quite a bit on the black lodge is Samael Aun Weor.

Mindbending 20 Dec 2011

You can always count on Rudolf Steiner to take any of your preconceived notions and set them on their ear, and Secret Brotherhoods might be the most amazing of all his books. Steiner is no easy read, and even harder to explain, so I'll do my best with lots of quotes from the great man himself.

Secret Brotherhoods is a set of lectures given by Steiner in November of 1917, and that's what's truly amazing. I can't think of anyone today, who's even come close to the logical intelligence of Rudolf Steiner, and in so many important areas of life, actually, the most important areas of our collective lives.

To sum up how Steiner is important today, is that explains the 2 thoughts that compete for our attention, or soul if you will. One is the Ahrimanic side of our being, and one is the Luciferian side of our being. Now this might seem antiquated to our modern minds, but wait, on the Arhimanic side, you have a pure materialistic view, while the Luciferian side, you have an idealistic view of life. The Ahrimanic side wants you to only see the material things in life, and to strive to towards them is the ideal, with money being the main issue.

The Luciferian side wants you to live in the mind, ignoring the material and striving only towards an unattainable utopia. So how is the relevant today? Republicans(Ahrimanic, material side) Democrats(Luciferian, communist ideals), and wait, there's a balance of both sides, a middle way, and that's the Christ consciousness. We are here not to fight about which way is right, we're here to learn to balance these two sides as Jesus showed us, and that's through love. This is a fight for the very soul of man, not just the vote for a certain party.

Hard to believe that Steiner gave these lectures nearly a hundred years ago, yet still they hold true and except that now, we're so polarized that to even mention that you're a moderate gets you labeled as 'wishy-washy' or too stupid to make up your mind. Well, the joke's on the name-callers, because being in balance is what our task is as a human being.

Here's Steiner's explanation of the Arimanic(could this be where the word manic originate from?) being(which is what is talked about in Faust): "When a human being enters earthly existence through birth he gains on the one hand the possibility of giving means of existence to his soul through his physical body. . . but on the other hand a person does not know his physical body at all well. What an extraordinary number of things go on in our body of which we know nothing . . . we arrive in this world with the garment of our organism without being able to to reach down into it with our soul to any great extent. Instead shortly before we are born, not very long before we are born, there is also an opportunity for another spiritual being, apart from our soul, to take possession of our body, namely, of the subconscious part of our body. This is a fact. Shortly before we are born another being indwells us; in the terminology we use today, we call this an ahrimanic being. It is just as much in us is our own soul.

"So we proceed through our life while having our soul and also a double who is far cleverer than we are, very intelligent, but with a mephistophelian intelligence(see politicians, bankers and lawyers for an example of this). and in addition also an ahrimanic will, a very strong will, a will that this more akin to the forces of nature than it is to our human will which is ruled by our heart and mind. . . Those electric currents are the forces that are introduced into our being by the being I have just been describing. . .They want to conquer the earth, so they need bodies. Having no bodies of their own they use much of human bodies as they can since the human soul cannot quite fill the human bodies."pages 56-57

And here's the catch, these beings can't stand death, so they depart when the body is about to expire. They control our automatic bodily systems, which can explain why we lose those controls when we die, or are even threatened with death(think of how ones loses control when they're severely frightened and you get the idea).

Anyway, that was just one page of a lecture, so if you want to jump into the very deep end of the metaphysical pool, Rudolf Steiner is your man.

As an aside, Stephanie Meyers, the author of the Twilight series, wrote a book called Host, that touches on this subject. It's worth reading.

rare treasure 24 Aug 2008

Rare insight to the world of "dark unknown", and its interaction with human life on Earth. Different spiritual forces with different aims, with the sleeping humanity caught in the middle. It seems we are far from being on the "top of the foodchain" ;-).
