This book treads a very intelligent and interesting path through the work of Freud. Chamberlain invites us to see Freud as a writer - and indeed Freud is a most accompished stylist and story teller. But the usefulness of this move goes much further. It is hard to engage fruitfully with Freud at present because there are so many disputes about the truth of his theories. These tend to polarize readers as adherents or opponents. Contrast this to the attitude one brings to reading a great literary work - like the work of Tolstoy of Proust. When we approach a work within the category of 'literature' we are usually much more generous - less worried about whether the grand theories are strictly justified. We don't throw 'Anna Karenin' or' Remembrance of things past' away becuse we are unpersuaded by the theological claims of the one or the bizarre theory of identity of the other. We treat these big claims lightly and concentrate on the wonderful succession of insights, suggestions and attitudes - without feeling compeled to line up as a beleiver or a hostile sceptic. It is a great achievement of Chamberlain to open up this generosity of interpretation to Freud. This is a highly civilized book; it is suggestive, rather than conclusive - but that is perhaps just what we need in this area. This is a type of book which we need but which present cultural arrangments tend, unfortunately, to discourage from being written. It is neither an academic textbook nor a highly simplisitic 'introductory' work. It has something serious to say but says it gracefully.
