his award-winning BBC series, starring Jan Francis and Bernard Hepton, is a gripping and authentic portrayal of the war waged by one group of Belgian resistance fighters against German occupation during the Second World War. Many of its storylines were taken from real life events. This definitive box set includes all three series - 42 episodes - plus a host of exclusive extras.

I happened to see a recent broadcast on satellite TV which whet my appetite to revisit this atmospheric series which I think is one of the best ever wartime serials.

Secret Army was filmed in the UK and Belgium and three series (comprising 43 episodes) were broadcast on BBC1 between early 1977 and late 1979. Created by Gerard Glaister (also responsible for the Colditz series) Secret Army tells the story of the Belgian resistance movement during the Second World War dedicated to repatriating Allied airmen, usually having been shot down by the Luftwaffe. This boxed set of 12 DVDs runs for about 40 hours and contains a number of extras such as cast interviews and is very well presented. Audio and visual quality is good considering the vintage of the episodes.

To me, one of the selling points of the series is that whilst each episode is a self contained story they also link together and this adds to the compulsion to see how the overall plot unfolds. I think the acting is very good, there's plenty of tension and atmosphere, and, I believe a lot of effort was invested in historical authenticity. This latter point also makes the series a fitting tribute to those involved in the sort of operations portrayed. The overall "hue" of all the episodes is "dark and dangerous" and full of suspense.

For a series of this vintage the cost of this boxed set does seem high, but then perhaps that is a reflection of the sustained interest there is in the series and its enduring quality.

I think even if it's your "first time round" and you haven't seen Secret Army before you'll be riveted by this set which makes it a worthwhile investment.

This cult series maintains its popularity and rightly so thirty plus years after it's creation. An excellent team of writers and the superb production of the BBC Drama dept.of the time. I have been a fan of this programme ever since it first came to our screens. The use of locations and the attention to detail is the making of the programme. The actors are convincing and the way they interact builds a suspense and credibility which has remained the ultimate in this genre. Although occasionally available on satellite you cannot beat the dvd without the ad breaks. The information available in Andy Priestner's companion "manual" 'The Complete Secret Army' adds to the series by detailing the background to each episode. The series has gained many followers who came to it through the parody Allo Allo, which used to annoy me but I appreciate that too. The follow-up series Kessler did not have quite the same addictive qualities but if you wish to follow the fate of the character so ably crafted by Clifford Rose it is worth buying. You may now gather that I liked the series immensely!Secret Army - Series 1-3 [DVD]

Best of the best and like Colditz they do not make them like this anymore!.
Watching it first round back in the late 70s i craved to see the series again when in the 1980s a three video pack was sold, sadly it only containing limited episodes...so as time passed the series was re run on UK Gold and eventually the complete series was released on DVD! couldnt be better a great winter evenings watching just like back in 1979!.

This isn't cheap by any means but belive me, it's worth it.
This is a fine example of BBC period drama.
It is excellent.
I've watched it so many times that I practically know it off-by -heart and have all but worn out the discs!
If you appreciate truly fine, intelligent wartime drama then I can't recomment this highly enough.

Without a doubt not only the best TV drama series made in the UK, but also the most underrated. The show has been unfairly eclipsed by the spoof 'Allo, 'Allo that came some years later (you can even see the origins of the "Madonna with the Big Boobies" in Secret Army)and I admit before watching I was concerned I wouldn't be able to get the BBC comedy and characters out of my head, and take this programme seriously. I needn't have worried, you are soon totally immersed in the lives of Albert, Monique and co and the tense drama will keep you on the edge of your seat. Often uncompromising, frequently not offering a happy ending, the writing and acting are pin sharp and could teach today's TV producers a thing or two.

Secret Army is a classic TV series (or rather 3 series) from the 1970's and has not lost anything over the years.

I will not go into stories or series breakdowns here as others have already done this but the basic premise is that during WW2 in occupied Europe a series of escape lines were set up to get allied airmen back to England to continue the fight. The German authorities want to stop them and will do anything they can to this end. Other resistance fighters consider themselves rivals and want to take over the escape line.

Well rounded characters expertly portrayed by a distinguished cast, excellent writing, superb production values and no CGI effects. An amazing theme tune but very little incidental music gives this an almost doccumentary feel.

Characters come and go, even regular cast members are killed off so you don't know who will survive. The Germans are portrayed not as stereotypical fanatics but as ordinary men serving theri country; yes Kessler the SS officer is evil but even he is given a human side. The good guys have to make difficult decisions in order to survive and sometimes even they are forced to kill or give airmen and others up to the Germans. No black and white here.

Three distinctly different series that link to tell the whole story of the resistance movement throughout 4 years of fighting.

Powerful and exciting. Get it.
