5.0 out of 5 stars The BBC & Drama at its Very Best, 14 Oct 2004
The final instalment of what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest period dramas ever made. Secret Army is excellently acted, written and directed. This was in the days before big budgets and the programme reminds us all that "Razz am a tazz special effects does not necessarily good drama make.

The characters and story lines are all very believable, no doubt because the attention to detail was superb and the character actors / actresses used were second to none. People who were actually involved with the real life 'Secret Army' were heavily involved - no 'poetic licence' reinterpretation here. Just gritty stories were the good guys don't always win and the bad guys are not always bad.

All the central characters are memorable, they were after all the inspiration for Hello Hello (sorry this always seems mentioned but is an unavoidable truth.). This is how you would imagine that the evasion line people and their German adversaries really were - no Fiction made super heroes just normal people, both good and bad and perhaps even evil, fighting a very dirty war.

This was when the BBC made the greatest dramas the world has known and this was one of the very best.

5.0 out of 5 stars When television was worth watching . . ., 22 Sep 2005
By Mr. R. Jordan (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought all three boxed sets of Secret Army, hoping to make them last. I strung 'Brideshead Revisited' out over six months, and planned to the same - what a failure! I ended up watching as many as three episodes a night because I was fascinated.

I saw this when it was originally broadcast in the late 1970's, and was gripped even then - even though too young really. The first and second series are fine, but it's this third one which made the deepest impression. It starts with D-Day and proceeds to Liberation in stomach-knotting fashion. Brilliant characters and acting, and not just the central bad guy Kessler that everybody remembers!

One episode that sticks in my mind as being exceptional: the Allies are coming, there's a curfew, the Germans are clearing out. It's just nail-biting, something big is on the way, you can hear it, and the ending is a total shock. I'm going to have to watch the whole set again, just to see it again . . .

There are no winners at the end, not really. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secret of Secret Army's appeal!, 5 April 2008
What can one add about such a gripping series as Secret Army that hasn't already been said? The characterisations and events draw one in to wartime and wartorn Belgium and the exceptionally dangerous business of operating an evasion line - and there were several of them across Continental Europe. Perhaps the secret of Secret Army's success and appeal is the fact that it is based, however loosely, on actual characters and activities of real wartime evasion-lines. Could we rise to the occasion today if called upon? Hopefully we will never have to answer that question.

5.0 out of 5 stars High class drama.
Secret Army is, for sure, the best drama series the BBC ever made. It really is top notch, especially in series three, as the Germans, in the shape of Luftwaffe flying ace... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to see this series again
What a good drama this was, even after 30 years.
A bit claustraphobic also adding to atmosphere that must have been prevailant occupied Belgium.
