5.0 out of 5 stars It should be No Secret how good this is!, 29 April 2004
If ever there was a series that needed to be put on DVD then this was it.Series One was excellent but Series Two did what many would have thoughtimpossible and was even better. It survived location and character changesand introduced a more up market La Candide and some new blood.
Kessler is still ruthless and seemingly without any compassion - thischanges slightly when he acquires a mistress. Brandt still plays thehonourable Luftwaffe police chief who at times achieves more with hisDutch Uncle approach to the prisoners than Kessler does with his morebrutal ways.
All the plots are well written, excellently acted and very authentic.Bernard Hepton is every inch the penny pinching bar owner who at the sametime is a cold, calculating patriot who will stop at very little to keep"Lifeline" going.
Both Angela Richards and Juliet Hammond-Hill play their roles as barmaids/ lifeline guides with the right mix of measured coolness and heartfeltpassion.
Clifford Rose and Michael Culver for their parts don't put a foot wrong asthe Gestapo Chief and his more sympathetic comrade in arms as they doevery thing in their power to smash the evasion line. One footnote here isthat unlike so many other productions Secret Army at times portrays theGermans, especially Brandt, as being very human - taking a look at hisfamily life and what effect the war, particularly the Allied bombingoffensives, was having on them.
Other regular characters are not just for padding out. Alain the radiooperator, Max the forger, the Doctor, Major Bradley all the flight crewsand even Natalie's uncle are far more than just ciphers. This series wasbased on real people and real events and maybe this is why it is sopopular now 25 years since it was made.
If you have seen Series One then Series Two is in my opinion a must. I amlooking forward to Series Three, which with luck may contain the"Un-aired" Last Episode, to be released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Standing the test of Time, 23 May 2004

(REAL NAME)
I remember watching Secret Army the original series and was delighted when it was re-released in DVD format. I thoroughly enjoyed series one,but series two is even better The story lines are of course based on actual happenings and you can imagine what it must have been like living under Nazi Occupation.the coldness of Kessler is chilling and the terror is palpable. So fitting when we are approaching the 60th anniversiry of the Normandy Landings How difficult must it have been for the Belgians to wait on the allies fighting through France and how much more difficult life must have got with the Germans and the dreaded gestapo Roll On Series Three. superb acting Why can't the BBC. reproduce series moreof this quality any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC Drama at its best!!, 16 Oct 2004
Get the technical stuff out of the way first. The transfer to DVD is more than adequate for a 25 year-old series. Die-hard fans will be disappointed by the lack of DVD extras, except for a 45 minute "filler" about the Resistance during WWII.
However, the meat of this issue, as is the case for the other two, is the content of the programmes themselves. There seems to be much more tension in the second series, enhanced by the presence of high-ranking German military in the same scenes as the Lifeline workers (though not being aware of it). There is a certain excitement (and fun?) about seeing the heads of the Brussels Gestapo and Luftwaffe Intelligence relaxing in the presence of people who are working for their downfall. Also seeing the Lifeline members leading double lives right in front of the noses of the same German heirarchy in this second series just adds to the excitement of wondering what is going to happen (will they get away with THAT?!!). I can't think of an "official" publication/documentary that could convey the same realism of what the Belgian folk went through during WWII.
If you want to see the humanity of both sides, and the influence of their idealism, then this is portrayed to great effect.
Thoroughly recommended.
