Book Description

21 Feb 2012 Secondhand and Vintage
The popularity of second hand and vintage shopping reflects our interest in exploring more eco-friendly consuming and also satisfies our ongoing fascination with objects that have a history. Add to that the fascinating secondhand culture of a city and you have a way of delving into both the past and present life around you while you shop for objects that you won't find in your average chain store or shopping mall. 'Secondhand & Vintage London' gives you an insider's guide to the best shops and markets for almost anything you would want to buy. The first part of the book is organised into sections by types of objects. All the key information you need to know (address, contact details, website and opening hours) is provided along with a brief description of the shop or stall. The second part of the book is organized by area so if you are in a particular neighbourhood you can visit any of the shops- colour coded to the types of objects they sell. Each district has a useful map and a QR so that you can connect to interactive maps specially created for this book. There is a special section of the book devoted to London's hidden gems. In addition, the author has interviewed the owners of particularly interesting shops and asked local residents for recommendations of where to grab a coffee or a bite to eat. Whether you live in London or you are visiting the city, this guide provides everything you need to find those special places. It is not about buying cheaply, but about affording more!

Review

'Whether you live in London or you are visiting the city, this guide provides everything you need to find those special places. It is not about buying cheaply, but about affording more!' --The Style King

'This little book is a must-have for anyone who loves a good forage for a particular pre-loved something or other'. --Dekadenssi

'Shopping vintage and secondhand can be hit-and-miss at the best of times. Add an unknown city into the mix and you ll need a whole lot of stamina and more than a little luck to track down something worthwhile. We re keeping our fingers crossed that these new secondhand and vintage city guides from Vivays are going to change all that. Like a textbook for the vintage-hunter, these guides cover everything from clothing to furniture to books, all organised by type and area. The London and Berlin vintage guidebooks are already available, and we re already excited about the Paris and New York versions coming out in 2013. --Thesimplethings.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Secondhand and Vintage London 27 Mar 2012
By RachelB
Format:Paperback
A fantastic guide, written by a real expert, Secondhand and Vintage London features the most unique, specialist and affordable hotspots around London. This A5 paperback easily trumps simply googling 'second-hand and vintage shops in London' in countless ways. For one thing, this lovingly put together book reads like your personal guide to the somewhat exclusive world vintage fashion and allows you to explore it neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Each of the shops featured are described and given an overall price guide by Andrew Whittaker, whose genuine passion for second-hand and vintage is easily perceived.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic resource! 8 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
I love this book. I have just moved to London and am setting up my flat. I didn't want to go the usual IKEA route. I like things that have a history. A friend told me she had seen this book and recommended it. It is fabulous. Not only did it list lots of shops and markets where I found furniture and stuff for the kitchen. It even guided me to a great vintage shop where I bought a 50s frock. The QRs on the maps were great as I still get lost alot!
