Book Description

At 22, Nathaniel Philbrick won the Sunfish North American Championship. Fifteen years later he decided to give it another try, embarking on a personal voyage of discovery that took him from the many ponds of his native Nantucket to the championship in the American heartland. A warm, funny, often moving story of a sailor, his family, and an island...and the voyage that brought them together.

i loved this book, nat philbbrick is one of the best nantucket authors. most of nathaniels books are historical about the island, but this one focuses on nat himself. very well written!
5.0 out of 5 stars All sailors will enjoy this book! 24 Jun. 2011

This is a great story of Nathaniel Philbrick's mid-life crisis as he goes back to the sunfish racing world to get back in touch with the youthful sailor he was. It has great sailing anecdotes, as well as warm, human stories about facing life and being an adult. I often think of this book and I recommend it to everyone who has loves to sail, as well as non-sailors who love water and boats. His self-deprecating humor always makes me laugh. I especially remember situations where things got out of control for Nat - as when sailing through a cut he suddenly ends up zooming out to the open sea, in a Sunfish. He captures that feeling of both exhilaration and fear that sailors know. This is not like the history books He is famous for, instead it's memoir that happens to involve boats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 11 Jun. 2014

A wonderful account of a man keeping his thoughts high in the clouds with his body still grounded on earth.
4.0 out of 5 stars Arcane but well-written 10 Mar. 2014

I think the reader must be interested in/familiar with Nantucket, and must be somewhat experienced with small sailboat racing, to appreciate this book. That said, Philbrick is an extraordinary writer and this was an enjoyable read. It doesn't have the universal appeal of 'Mayflower,' 'Last Stand,' or 'Heart of the Sea,' but I'm glad to have read it. His wife is a saint!
4.0 out of 5 stars Something different 30 Dec. 2013

Nice to read something totally different than his historical novels. Both have been outstanding however. Being a deprived former sailor I truly loved his descriptions of races.
