Product Description

Nicholas Spencer, charismatic head of the medical research company Gen-Stone, involved in the development of an anticancer vaccine, suddenly disappears. His private plane crashes, but his body is not found. Rocking the financial and medical world even more, comes the shocking revelation that Spencer had looted Gen-Stone of huge sums of money - and that his wife, Lynn, is accused of having participated in the scam. Narrowly escaping death when her mansion is set on fire, Lynn turns to her stepsister, Carley, a columnist for the Wall Street Weekly, to help prove that she was not her husband's accomplice. As Carley proceeds with her investigation, she is confronted by seemingly impenetrable questions: Is Nicholas Spencer dead or in hiding? Was he guilty or set up? And as the facts begin to unfold, she becomes the focus of a dangerous group involved in a sinister and fraudulent scheme.

Mary Higgins Clarke writes exceptionally well and this is reflected in her book 'Second Time Around'. Each chapter flows and secures an easy read. Characters are intriguing and the storyline is impressive. However, at moments I found the book tedious as it becomes more and more repetitive. A subtantial part of the book focuses on 'Carly', (the main character), attending meetings and juggling the possibilities of whether her step-sisters' husband is dead or not. I found this part of the book bland and long winded. However, Mary Higgins Clarke does seem to be 'clued up' on the financial/medical world of today and suceeds in providing a wide range of characters that add extra interest to parts of the book.
However, if I were to put this book into a genre I would not know where to put it; but one thing's for sure, I would not call it a thriller.

I bought this book because I have all of MHC's books, but this is not herbest. The story takes a while to develop. It's not very thrilling, although every chapter engages you enough to want to read more. One thingI find unrealistic is the idea that a team of three journalists can beresearching a story for such a long time without every being required topublish about it.
Then again, the descriptions of characters, placesand environments such as the medical world and the financial world, arequite realistic and engaging.
The story is written from two persons,Carley, a finacial reporter, and Ned, who tragically lost his wife. Thetwo different viewpoints make the story much more interesting and give itsome speed.
Not a must-read, but certainly a nice-to-read.

A real pageturner 14 Feb 2004

I've just finished reading all of Minette Walters books and picked this one up almost at random. That was less than a week ago so it's certainly one you can't put down.
I found the characters believable, and the plot exciting. Definitely worth a read, keeps you guessing until the last few pages.
