Second Sight by Maria Rachel Hooley, the third installment in the Sojourner series, is splendid. Hooley continues to catch me by surprise because she doesn't always deliver what you're expecting. I find that refreshing.
Elizabeth Moon is struggling with life, day and night. In the day, she is constantly reminded of her loss by Lev's absence. At night, she is surrounded by dreams of Lev that taunt her, and once she wakes up he is always gone. She can't escape and she doesn't understand why he abandoned her. I mean Angels don't die so where the heck is he?
Second Sight brings back a lot of the old characters from Sojourner and Covenant and also introduces some new characters. Surprisingly, I was glad to see Griffin back. I approve of Lizzie and Griffin's new friendship, and I think he really underwent some character changes since Sojourner. He redeemed himself, and I like how Hooley wrote him in as a "big brother" instead of a love interest.
The suspense was the best part of this novel. It took me a little while and some questioning before I decided: "Who is good?", "Who is bad?", and "Where the heck is Lev?"
I gave Second Sight by Maria Rachel Hooley 4 STARS and I strongly recommend this novel, as well as this series.
