Book Description

Another thrilling Bolitho adventure! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

June 1815. On the eve of Waterloo, a sense of finality and cautious hope pervade a nation wearied by decades of war. But peace will present its own challenge to Adam Bolitho, captain of His Majesty's Ship Unrivalled, as many of his contemporaries face the prospect of discharge. The life of a frigate captain is always lonely, but for Adam, mourning the death of his uncle Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho, that solitude acquires a deeper poignancy. He is, more than ever, alone, at the dawning of a new age for the Royal Navy, where the only constants are the sea and those enemies, often masked in the guise of friendship, who conspire to destroy him. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I read, with great sadness, of the death of Sir Richard Bolitho. In my mind I had sailed with him through every adventure. And, for a just a moment, his obviously Nelsonian death filled me with an enervating sense of loss. But with Adam Bolitho now at the helm and am, once again, content. Mr. Kent had so well developed the character of the headstrong nephew of a peerless uncle that the transition from one to the other is virtually seamless. Kent has lost none of his panache as the change is made. The writing is, as always, crisp and elegant; the smell of smoke and oakum tantalizing to the senses, and the focus on loyalty, courage, and honor a delight for the soul. Sail on, Adam, and I shall revel in sailing with you.

The saga continues... 28 Dec 1999
Format:Hardcover
Excellent! I received this book last month and finished it last night (too late for an early morning at work!) It takes up where the finale left off...and does so in typical Kent/Bolitho fashion. The "weaving" that took place in the "first" series sets the stage with characters and plots already laid...a nice "seque" if you will. There is no real letdown. if there is anything that's a surprise/disappointment (only intitially) is that Adam gets into a few positions where you will say "...gee, seen this before..." until you realize...real life is just this way! All in all I really enjoyed it! Life begins again...

The saga continues....

I read the last few Bolitho books out of loyalty to an old series. I was getting a little tired of "I love you Kate, but I can't see you because I'm blind!" "I love you too Dick, but they are out to get us!" The best part of the latter books were the adventures of Adam Bolitho. Thankfully, Adam assumes center stage. The series is rejuvenated.
