As the previous reviewer said, you get a feel without necessarily understanding. Some of these poems use a very surreal hard to grasp imagery. There is a lot of vocabulary well out of the range of even those with a large vocabulary. Navrozov translates beautifully however since there is a majesty at times in these paradoxical and hard to grasp images formed of complex associations, that Pasternak seems to paint so effortlessly, but requires much effort to understand on the intellectual level. However it may be that Pasternak reaches us most lucidly in his poetry and lyricism , allowing us to absorb the meaning by a slow process of osmosis, in the manner one might appreciate a painting, returning to it with renewed interest.

O Duncan of grey guesses! - fate.
Oh host of legions in his omens!
O god, my Lord, what hast though made
on our sale to the commons!

or:

thus summer evenings can disperse
the rain in just one dream, inspire!
Whose light their irides may curse:
thus quarrels with the sun transpire.
thus they begin to live in verse.

His work feels spiritual, and is moving. Well worth persisting with, since despite the complexity, there is an intricacy and beauty of design at work.

The Holy Fool Trumps 19 Nov 2008
By demola
Format:Paperback
I could sense and feel something rich, complex, splendid and invigorating in these poems even as I confess that I understood not a jot of this translation. It sounded wonderful and refreshingly sonorous nonetheless. I was able to track down other translations (at northwestern.edu for instance) that were a tad more prosaic and much more readable. Oh well I should have learnt russian ...

Stalin is said to have struck Pasternak's name off a NKVD list telling them to "leave that holy fool alone". Thank goodness!

Mind blowing! 17 Mar 2011
By Angel House VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I have recently started reading Russian poets in translation. I was keen to buy a collection by Boris Pasternak because one of my favourite films is Dr Zhivago - which I watch every New Year's Day. I could not put these poems down. They are deep and lyrical - and fantastic examples of poems in form. I am awestruck how the translator has maintained the line end rhymes. A collection I will be returning to over and over again.
