Biography

b. 1956, Middlesex, England. Alongside Bob Greenwood and Steve Phillips, Messer is the pre-eminent UK guitarist to incorporate the National steel guitar, as well as slide guitar, into his acoustic performances. Messer spent some time in Nashville as a young man soaking up the sounds in the home of country music. He returned to England in the late 70s and bought his first National steel guitar ... I just bought a copy of 'Second Mind' and without a doubt it's one of the most interesting and diverse albums of the year so far. It's got a beautiful feel all through it, and a wide selection of tracks that highlight Messer's enormous talent for trailblazing new material whilst maintaining the warmth and traditions of the blues. In particular 'Locomotive Skin', 'Big Wind', 'Love' and 'Bluer Than Blue' are the tracks that left me really spinning, but an album like this should really be digested whole, as it stands out from start to finish.

I'm not the biggest fan of the blues .... don't own any CDs by the old stalwarts, but do like Robert Cray, the rockier side of Eric Clapton, Jo Bonamassa, and the odd track by Stevie Ray Vaughan. This album, though, is fantastic ... superb guitar playing, mixed with a crazy variety of other instruments, and it really hums. What is particularly great is the emotional depth to the playing ... these guys sound like their lives depend on it, and are completely involved in the music. If you are a guitar freak, then this is definitely worth checking out.

The Michael Messer Band are brilliant live; and the CD isn't quite as good as the live performance, which is unfortunate (or maybe it's because they just keep getting better). The track "Hummingbirds in My Soul" is tremendous; the live version is even better. See and hear them if you can!
