I stumbled across this while checking I did actually have the whole of United’s output. When X was issued I took it as a bonus, recognising that time was running out on many of the original band. Most of those voices have now fallen silent, but Wolfgang Dauner remains active and it was with some delight that I found out about this new project. So how does the Second Generation compare with its illustrious forebears? It stands comparison very well indeed. He has brought back Dave King who was bassist on the later 1G albums, together with a first-rate selection of German players from the likes of the NDR Big Band and the Carla Bley Big Band. The material is familiar from the classic UJRE albums, but with a new twist and often to my ears a refreshingly lighter touch. This first outing is however firmly anchored in the work of the first generation. Now if he could just lure some of the younger bandleaders from the rest of Europe to join we would have something living and evolving the way that first generation did. In the meantime this is one to enjoy.
