Product Description

Product Description

Second Choice challenges some of the assumptions in Western culture and gives a different slant on the idea of success. Viv Thomas insists that to live our lives well it is vital that we are able to live in a world of second choice or no choice at all. Through the lens of Daniel's experience in Babylon as well as contemporary stories and reflections, Viv Thomas explains that when our lives are dislocated wonderful things can happen. Second choice situations can become places of grace, community, imagination and maturity if we learn to embrace life as it is.

Viv Thomas, using the Old Testament account of Daniel who lived in exile, shows, reassuringly, that in this twenty-first century world where things go wrong, the unexpected happens and sickness and upset just rear their head when you least expect it, that God is in overall control.

Through prayer he says we can see the 'wider picture' and far from second-choices being 'ogres', we can work with them because God works around them - they may not be eliminated, but our perspective changes when we see second-choices and problems etc silhouetted and reduced in size against God's awesome, over-ruling power.

The book is very readable, full of real life stories of contemporary folk and their challenges, and gives a glimpse of Viv's heart attack and how his perpective changed.

Having just read the book, I'm about to start back at the beginning again! If you want to see what God is doing in your life, and can do if you allow Him.....buy the book! Best book Ive read in years.

In this book Viv Thomas examines how the book of Daniel throws light on the "second choices" all of us must face. These second choices are things like sickness, redundancy, relationship difficulties and so on. Daniel's experience of exile in Babylon is applied to our complex world where God allows second choices into our lives to mature and shape us. Viv's unique approach is that he talks about suffering yet the book is wonderfully positive.

Although the book is immensely readable it is also thought-provoking and has huge depth. It is littered with stories of ordinary contemporary Christians who are living for Jesus despite difficult circumstances and are doing so well. He also uses his own experience and includes an extraordinary chapter on his recent heart attack and the impact it has had on him.

"Second Choice" helped me to face the realities in my own life and understand God is still there and doing something amazing. An inspiring, well-researched and innovative approach.
