The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a worthy sequel to the original Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with virtually the same, all-star cast plus the addition of Richard Gere and Tamsin Grieg. It follows the lives of the characters as they remain at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel run by well-meaning but misguided Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel), during their autumn years.

If you liked the first film, you definitely need to see this one. If you haven’t seen the first yet, watch that beforehand. With such a large cast the second film wastes no time supplying character backgrounds for new viewers.

The main storylines are the presence of a hotel inspector sent by a wealthy investor and the wedding of central characters Sonny and Sunaina (Tena Desae). The latter adds life to the film with colour, dance and music. Writer Ol Parker teases us as we try to work out the true motivations of the new guests.

Touching and sometimes hilarious plotting underlies sharp and witty dialogue, with Sonny and Mrs Donnelly (Maggie Smith) stealing the show with many of the best one-liners. I watched this in the cinema and there were many moments that had the audience in stitches, although I did feel this was at the expense of some of the poignancy present in the first film.

This film is particularly popular among older audiences but there is no reason for it not to be equally enjoyable among groups of adults of any age.

I challenge anybody to leave this film without a smile on their face.

I was surprised that this sequel was as good as the first film because often they do not live up to expectations. However this film was delightful and just as good as the first. There were funny moments throughout. Loved the colourful scenery also. Would be able to watch this again and again.

Saw the first and just loved this sequel. I defy anyone not to come away with a feel good factor. Silly? Possibly? Unrealistic and unlikely? Possibly. Magic, heart warming, sad, happy, delightful. DEFINITELY. We would have stayed to watch it again if we could!

Absolutely everything almost everyone has said is true. A most uplifting, humerous and brilliant film. I can't wait for the dvd to come out. Loved the 1st one and the 2nd certainly did not disappoint. A must see - better than all the blood and guts! A truly uplifting film and my friend and I came out smiling - stunning costumes, colour and wit.

The first film was such a runaway success that the odds seem stacked against the sequel being as good, but - like Spiderman - it very nearly pulls it off! Anyone who loved the tone and blend of the actors is sure to enjoy this one as well. They are very well served, as before, by a script by Ol Parker, which has many funny lines and insights like shafts of light. The story is more chaotic, perhaps, lacking the unity of the arrival and the sense of discovery of the first film, but the sense of the magic of the place and emotions caught in the full flood of life is there again, with the group dynamic allowing it to jump around in a way that feels quite pacy. It seems to be constructed around doubles, the principal one being the two plots, one about the acquisition of a second hotel by Sonny, and the second about the preparations for his marriage to Sunaina in which true love is shown not to run all that smoothly. It's quite well handled, so that the making-up adds to the spark of the final part. It also parallels Judi Dench's romance with Bill Nighy - less a certainty than it seemed when he returned to the hotel at the end of the first film. Richard Gere pops up, so inevitably more romance blossoms, again not too easily. However it all holds together remarkably well, so that the Bollywood-style celebration at the end really takes off, even though it is nuanced with hints of other, sadder things. Altogether it is a triumphant return to the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Dev Patel is particularly outstanding in a larger role than he had before. The wedding itself is fantastically colourful and teeming, and John Madden's direction makes the most of the actors and setting.

If you need a pick me up then see this film. It is full of colour, humour, pathos and feel good factor. It also features some of the best actors this country has to offer. It does not disappoint and teaches us all, no matter what age, to never give up on living life to the fullest.
