3 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Lucian Taylor on 9 Aug. 2007
Format: Audio CD
There is a sub-genre dubbed 'loner psych', an appellation used primarily by collectors of 1970s private pressing psychedelia and epitomised by Gary Higgins' recently canonised 'Red Hash,' or more famously, Skip Spence's 'Oar.' It would not surprise me to learn that James Toth is intimately familiar with such curios, as 'Second Attention' is an album unashamed of its influences. You are immediately struck by the fact that the cover is a direct homage to John and Beverley Martyn's 'Stormbringer' and the music contained within is sometimes in danger of falling into the realms of pastiche. The religious imagery of the lyrics has been criticised for just that, aping the Dylan of 'John Wesley Harding' or 'Slow Train Coming' but without the same conviction. Yet I think that is somewhat disingenuous. Whilst they certainly lack the earnestness of such works, you get the feeling that Toth is aiming for some personal reinvention of Christian symbolism, akin to what William Blake achieved in his poetry. There is also a profound optimism to his vision, with frequent celebrations of salvation. The Dylan similarities do not end with the lyrics, however. Toth's adenoidal vocals, combined with his phrasing and tendency to cram as many syllables to the bar as possible, continue the trend. It is certainly a more song-orientated album than many of the releases under the Wooden Wand moniker. The dominant form is folk and country-gospel, with a low-key backing occasionally offering hints of his more psychedelic adventures through eruptions of reverb-laden fuzz guitar. A certain over-reverence to one's roots is ultimately nothing to complain about, and whilst the album is a little on the brief side, I doubt anybody would feel short changed by such a literate and beatific work.

With all the DREADFUL music out today, this album is a huge relief! Wooden Wand has talent, creativity, intelligence & a great sound. Noticeably inspired by two greats, Bob Dylan & Neil Young, this album has a classic folk/rock feel, with originality & ingenuity. Definitely an album worth buying, you will not be disappointed!

Refreshing New Sounds 11 Jan. 2007
By Alicia R. Marroquin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Wooden Wand and the Sky High Band is the most refreshing sound I've heard in ages. I am a writer for 2 music magazines and highly recommend the music. It is Bob Dylan like in so far as lyrics and the reverberating high voice of the lead singer. It has a gospel feel in that the lyrics speak of the Madonna, Christ, and Elijah, but it doesn't bog down as preachy. Poetic rhythm & rhyme is at times more important than the meaning or content of the words themselves; the lyrics are fun yet makes one think of greater possibility, like Dylan. And oh how we need that today over the whiny 'I don't want to be here' lyrics of today.
Awesome live, awesome in the studio 20 Sept. 2006
By JenS - Published on Amazon.com

I had the chance to see Wooden Wand perform live at the Knitting Factory in NYC this year. Although it was a short set, the music blew me away. Sure the lyrics are reminscent to Dylan and Young but their simplicity is a breath of fresh air - especially for new music seekers like myself.

"Second Attention" will bring just that to this promising group of musicians. I look forward to many more albums and a healthy national tour in the upcoming years!

infectious songwriting isn't exactly the correct to way to describe the music.. because it's more like an innoculation against crap. this record leaves you feeling refreshed and appreciating what just happened to you. you'll toast your new found musical health.

these songs are also unbelievably solid. there's something almost magical about their quality and ability to last. they'll ring about in your head for days, but not in that annoying way pop music refuses to leave like the pain of a tooth cavity. it's more well-intentioned than that. i have forgotten and come back to this record 3 times now. it's just so damn robust it won't be eroded by anything else i hear.

this record is part of one of those unseen foundational supports of music today. you don't normally pay attention to what it's doing, but if it didn't exist, we'd be on very shaky ground.

Touched my Soul 12 Sept. 2006
By Connie - Published on Amazon.com

Second Attention by Wooden Wand is by far the most moving CD to date. Every song touched my soul. The words and music are so surreal it makes you stop and think and ponder touching words set to music. My favorite Sweet Xiao Li just keeps playing over in my mind. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for pure lyrics and music to refresh their soul.
