Product Description

One simple thesis.
But it threatens the very
roots of the Constitution.
There's too much at stake.

20,000 gun deaths a year, schoolyard massacres, and now a wave of militia bombings... America is under siege.

At the heart of the storm is Josette Horvath, the FBI counter-terrorist agent whose world is torn apart when her young son, Daniel, falls victim to a militia bomb. Her brother Bernard's latest political studies thesis meanwhile focuses on the thorny issue suddenly foremost with the President and an outraged America: stricter gun control.

But Bernard doesn't appreciate just how momentous and far-reaching his thesis is destined to become. And as Josette, torn between tracking the bombers and coping with her son's fate, discovers the extent to which the far right have infiltrated the FBI and the White House - she realizes this is one final battle she can't possibly win.

An explosive, uncompromising thriller which confronts head-on one of the most fiery issues of the past two decades: gun control.

Reviews:
If Vince Flynn and John Grisham got together to tackle probably the most controversial issue of the past two decades - Gun Control - this is what they might come up with. Hair-trigger suspense all the way. Electrifying.
Crime Ink

The FBI and Capitol Hill go head-on against the far-right and self-appointed militias in this no-holds-barred thriller. Amongst all the bullets and mayhem, the thorny issue of gun control is also handled sensitively – but don't expect much time to draw breath between the two. A 'loaded' issue in more ways than one.
Books, etc.

A novelist of real accomplishment.

*********

Read the book that publishers didn't want you to read!

At the height of my career with Penguin, between Past Imperfect and Ascension Day, I wrote a novel called 'The Second Amendment.' Too American a theme, said Penguin; too controversial, said US publishers. However, to my agent and numerous readers since, in terms of a hard-edged, no compromises, adrenalin-rush thrill ride, it was my best book.

Too controversial? We should recall that pre-911, the Oklahoma bombing was the biggest terrorist attack to take place on US soil; and the NRA continues to be one of the most powerful lobby groups.

In the ten years since first writing The Second Amendment, there have been over 200,000 gun deaths in the USA, from simple domestic or street arguments to drive-by shootings or Columbine-style school massacres. It remains an enigma of US society that there isn't as strong a voice for the victims as for the groups keen to preserve guns; which is no doubt why, still ten years on, gun control remains one of the hottest debates in US society and beyond.

Edit notes: updates and changes for some US idiomatics have been made on the 20th November, 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tragically ironic 17 Dec 2012
By Skyfox
Format:Kindle Edition
I have family in the States and visit them regularly. Whether because of the higher rate of violence and different gun laws, I'm always more watchful and cautious when travelling there, so this was a topic that intrigued me.

I in fact read both parts of this book a month ago, but with the tragic shooting yesterday felt compelled to comment. On the surface this is a thrills and spills action thriller. But beneath there's a lively debate too which got me into the political and lobbying set-up and gave me a better understanding of just why tougher gun laws - a no-brainer to most of us Brits - have been so hard to get implemented in the USA.

Out of all this wrangling arises a thesis which does actually have a chance of succeeding with US Congress. Some far right factions panic and events explode as the two sides battle for the hearts and minds of America over gun control.

But what struck as ironic is the same panic depicted in this book to bury the proposal can be seen in some of the right-wing review reactions to it. The author appears to have hit a more painfully accurate chord than he realized. A topical subject, sensitively handled. Have recommended to a number of friends and family as a 'must-read'.

5.0 out of 5 stars On target in more ways than one 7 Dec 2012

On target in more ways than one

I finished reading this book a while back, but what prompted me to write a review was seeing a recent TV program about the Oklahoma bombing and Timothy McVeigh.

I looked back at some of the right-wing reactions to this book on the US site and shook my head (although I'm glad to see reactions here on the UK site are more balanced and thoughtful). First off, it's a very good and exciting thriller. On that front it really works. And regardless of your POV on guns, it works there too because it gets you behind the political lobbying and manages also to make those exciting and really come alive. You're there with the pros and cons of the debate every step of the way.

But what struck me about recent TV program was McVeigh's paranoia over the govt possibly taking his precious guns away which led to his final maniacal action. OK, an extreme case, but what worries me is that same paranoia is evident in the way many US readers have reacted to this book. And that is very, very unsettling indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Read 8 May 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded this because it was free but unfortunately it was only half a book! I did in the end buy the second half of the book as I wanted to know what happened and enjoyed it although I do not like the way Amazon are splitting the books in half! if a book is worth reading then sell it at a reasonable initial price and people will buy, especially if the author has more books because then you know they can't be too bad. I did enjoy the book and have since downloaded others from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dynamic yet sensitively-handled
The action button has been hit first on this thriller and the pace is breathless throughout. The subject too is handled well, but without it getting too stuffy or heavy. Read more
