Book Description

One simple thesis.
But it threatens the very
roots of the Constitution.
There's too much at stake.

20,000 gun deaths a year, schoolyard massacres, and now a wave of militia bombings... America is under siege.

At the heart of the storm is Josette Horvath, the FBI counter-terrorist agent whose world is torn apart when her young son, Daniel, falls victim to a militia bomb. Her brother Bernard's latest political studies thesis meanwhile focuses on the thorny issue suddenly foremost with the President and an outraged America: stricter gun control.

But Bernard doesn't appreciate just how momentous and far-reaching his thesis is destined to become. And as Josette, torn between tracking the bombers and coping with her son's fate, discovers the extent to which the far right have infiltrated the FBI and the White House - she realizes this is one final battle she can't possibly win.

An explosive, uncompromising thriller which confronts head-on one of the most fiery issues of the past two decades: gun control.

If Vince Flynn and John Grisham got together to tackle probably the most controversial issue of the past two decades - Gun Control - this is what they might come up with. Hair-trigger suspense all the way. Electrifying.
Crime Ink

The FBI and Capitol Hill go head-on against the far-right and self-appointed militias in this no-holds-barred thriller. Amongst all the bullets and mayhem, the thorny issue of gun control is also handled sensitively – but don't expect much time to draw breath between the two. A 'loaded' issue in more ways than one.
Books, etc.

A novelist of real accomplishment.

Read the book that publishers didn't want you to read!

At the height of my career with Penguin, between Past Imperfect and Ascension Day, I wrote a novel called 'The Second Amendment.' Too American a theme, said Penguin; too controversial, said US publishers. However, to my agent and numerous readers since, in terms of a hard-edged, no compromises, adrenalin-rush thrill ride, it was my best book.

Too controversial? We should recall that pre-911, the Oklahoma bombing was the biggest terrorist attack to take place on US soil; and the NRA continues to be one of the most powerful lobby groups.

In the ten years since first writing The Second Amendment, there have been over 200,000 gun deaths in the USA, from simple domestic or street arguments to drive-by shootings or Columbine-style school massacres. It remains an enigma of US society that there isn't as strong a voice for the victims as for the groups keen to preserve guns; which is no doubt why, still ten years on, gun control remains one of the hottest debates in US society and beyond.

Edit notes: updates and changes for some US idiomatics have been made on the 20th November, 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great political thriller 9 May 2013

This is the continuation of the series - make sure you buy both together as you need to carry straight on. It's a good read, well written and very apt at this point in time with issues over gun control in the US.

    3.0 out of 5 stars A bit dissapointing 9 April 2015

    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After having enjoyed several books by this author I was disappointed by book 1 but thought the plot worth following so bought book 2. I thought that I had made a mistake but it suddenly took off about halfway through and became quite gripping.

I think that the problem for me was the author constantly hammering home his message which resulted in long passages of political waffle. I admit to skipping through a lot of it.

I chose this book because it was a freebie and have never come across the author before. I am so glad I did, it had me hooked form the start and I immediately purchased the next book in the series. The story kept me on the edge of my seat and was well written. Would highly recommend to anyone to read

4.0 out of 5 stars Fitting Conclusion 21 Sept. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition
Second Amendment #2 is the final volume in John Matthews's excellent political thriller series on the gun control issue in the USA. It is a fitting concluding volume and one I enjoyed very much.

No matter which side of the fence you sit on in this gun control debate, you will find this thriller highly entertaining and fast paced with plenty of action.

I thought Second Amendment #1 slightly better and more fast paced. I gave it 5 stars. I give this one 4 stars. #2 could have used a little tighter editing -- it is longer and gets bogged down in legislative minutiae in places which I found hard to follow and slowed down the story. Just my opinion. It's still a damn good read and better than many thrillers out there.

I look forward to reading some of Mr. Matthews's other books. He has several on the market.

One thing I would recommend is to read both books close together. I left a bit of a gap between them and had to refresh my memory about some of the characters from Book #1.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Second Amendment part 2 10 Aug. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition
Followed on from the first book without a break. Twist and turns to the story all the way to the end, could not put the book down. Brilliantly written, well worth the cost of buying the book. I will certainly be reading More of John Matthews books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would it really stop the madness? 16 Sept. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I feel like this book should be required reading for the American legislature. Maybe then the trend of random deaths and ever escalating death toll in homes, cities and schools could be reversed. To people living outside the USA, their love affair with guns seems madness. To American citizens it appears to be a rational reaction to an ever-increasing fear of gun crime and violence. Who is right? Both sides? Neither? John Matthews appears to have an alternative answer that addresses all the concerns raised by both sides of the debate. Real life is not that simple, even if someone were to attempt to replicate the solution offered here, it would be bogged down in political debate and stalling tactics, as ever. Or maybe I'm just cynical.

In the first few pages the book sets out the problems in America's gun laws. It then progresses into a predictable thriller with the occasional reference back to the 2nd Amendment... Read more
