First I should confess I didn't buy this after watching the English Patient! I'd caught some of her music before, but this brings much of her best work together.
Obviously this won't be everyone's kind of thing, but if you find Central European folk music at all appealing, this is as good a place to start as any. (Though there are Irish and Hindi tunes here too -- testament to MS's remarkable versatility.)
Enjoy!

For those who have travelled to the Eastern half of Europe, or heard the evocative voices of the Balkans and the Hungarian plains, or simply want to hear to hear something different, then this may be of interest to you. Marta Sebestyen covers traditional folk songs from across the region. From the melancholy to the soft lullabye, her songs and voice invokes a variety of feellings and emotions.

Márta Sebestyén came to fame through her soundtrack for The English patient and it seems that some have found her other work more difficult. This is unfair and this album should have done much to redress that, featuring only the more accessible songs from her output. There are songs from her collaborations as a singer for the Hungarian band Muzsikás, who specialised in playing traditional Hungarian folk songs, from Vujicsics, who specialised in Serbo-Croat folk music and even a couple from Scotland and India thrown in for good measure. Holding it all together is Márta's divine voice.
