Underrated Brilliance 17 Dec 2010
By A. K. Sheikh VINE™ VOICE
Sebastopol Road may be one of the best albums ever made in its genre. It's a fair stretch on from the spit-and-sawdust vibe of Mega City Four's first album but the strong melodies, heartfelt, open and honest lyrics are still in evidence in the strongest songs here: Callous, Peripheral (maybe the best song on the album but it's hard to choose), Props and Clown. The album also displays pop gems in "Ticket Collector", "Scared of Cats", "What's Up" and the quirky "Amne Bancroft", ad well as their Top 40 hit "Stop". This would be a five-star perfect album but for the inclusion of the tuneless "Vague" and the dirge-like "Prague" ( although Muse managed to ruin even this!). These two songs aside, this is still one of the best British indie-rock albums of the 90s. Now stopreading this and buy it while you can!

I remember having this album on vinyl while at uni in the 90s, lost it, and have meant to get a cd copy for ages. Why did I wait? It is just awesome! Wiz was an amazingly talented songwriter who could marry bittersweet lyrics with fantastic tunes that on first hearing you could think were just indie rock, but in fact they are much deeper and cleverer than that. While The Stone Roses got all the plaudits, MC4 were the real deal, who could play live and produced some amazing albums. Sebastopol Road is evidence of MC4 at the top of their game. Wiz sadly died in 2006, an awful loss to his family, friends and music.
