This story of an Irish immigrant arriving in Liverpool in 1847 unfolds in a gentle and teasing way. Various emotions are felt as one empathises with Clare's plight: sympathy, joy, anger. I enjoyed the rags to riches tale brought about by hard work and determination on Clare's part. A clever trick used by the author is to bring in characters from other books. The fact that Clare named her child Joss after Joss Greenwood, a character who lived in the same village where Clare was found and nurtured, reinforced the picture I had of Edgeclough. Being from Lancashire I enjoy reading the dialogue which the author writes in dialect. A thoroughly enjoyable read which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.

whilst I really enjoyed the book, the ending was really poor.It leaves you with loads of unanswered questions and is a real anti-climax.A really good read, though not one of her better books,as the characters are not as strong as they usually are in Audrey Howards novels.I found myself getting angry at the selfishness of Clare, and hoping she would stay with the man who isn't her true love because he is so much nicer!Overall the story works well, but again the ending was really poor, you're left feeling that another chapter should be there to finish it off properly.
