I first came across this book, as a child, over twenty years ago, and I still hold it dear to my heart. The illustrations conjour up the colourful animal inhabitants of Fern Hollow beautifully, each having a destinct personality and occupation, vital to the everyday life of the villagers throughout the four seasons. Most memorable pictorial scenes are of the cheeky young scamps stealing apples from a neighbours tree, a dusty, old book-shop and a hot, lazy summer evening by the boat-house. The narrative itself takes the young reader on a guided tour of one year in the life of this charming village. Full of anecdotes and playfullness, this book really is an absoulute delight, take it from me, your child shall treasure it forever.

I first came across this book in a charity shop, aged about six. I was immediately drawn in by the enchanting illustrations, and read it time and time again. One of my favourite childhood books, I still believe it to be a magical volume, and would recommend it for anyone with young children-especially if you wish to give them a headstart with their literacy skills. I always treasured this, and was annoyed when it was thrown out without my consultation, along with the rest of my Fern Hollow collection.
