5.0 out of 5 stars A warm, witty journey, 18 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: A Season Abroad: Reflections on a Journey of Faith (Paperback)
Having relocated with my family to Paris for a year under similar circumstances as Pooley, I could really relate to the highs and lows that this American mother describes in her warm and witty memoir. Some of the scenes had me laughing out loud (for example: the washing machine in Wales that sounded like it was crying, "Help me, help me!"). Even readers who've never had an expatriate experience can undoubtedly relate to Pooley's anxiety and exhiliration as she moves with her family-- and their very high-strung dog-- to London for three years. You join her on the emotional roller coaster ride as she and her pre-teenage daughters struggle to adjust to the new school system, make friends, forge a community, and even decode "English" (as opposed to American) English. I am not Catholic but was intrigued and inspired as Pooley recounts her religious conversion. This beautiful and thoughtful tale is a must for anyone moving overseas... or simply across town!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom and an Intimate View of a Life Abroad, 9 Aug 2005
This review is from: A Season Abroad: Reflections on a Journey of Faith (Paperback)
Pooley shares her personal triumphs and discoveries as an ex-pat in London. Through this journal-like writing the reader sees day to day life through the eyes of a writer who sees the nature of life -- in her family, her decision to become Catholic and in her experiences in London. Not at all a guide or how to book... this book is about embracing new ways and creating experiences that broaden and change lives. The author's experience as a gardener adds a rich texture to her daily life -- of the grand old trees and well cultivated landscape of some of London's great parks. As a gardener Pooley keenly appreciates the changing seasons in life abroad and in the lives of the author and her family during their time as ex-pats.

5.0 out of 5 stars A warm, witty journey, 19 Aug 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reflection on personal growth through relocation, 25 July 2005
By Robin Pascoe - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Season Abroad: Reflections on a Journey of Faith (Paperback)
A Season Abroad is a lovely, well-written reflection on the spiritual growth of the author--a landscaper by profession--after she moves abroad to London with her daughters and her husband (for his job.) By 'grounding' herself in a new church and faith, Pam Pooley discovers her own way of dealing with the losses associated with culture shock. I found it to be a unique, introspective take on the often mundane challenges of international relocation. It will surely resonate with others who feel compelled to reach out to find new community after a move and experience personal growth as a result.
