I have bought the set, but I have a serious problem with Season 8 Disc 5: the two last episodes are unreadable. I tried the disc on several player with the same issue. On a PC, scanning the DVD shows that the second half of the DVD has many I/O errors. The puzzling thing is that I exchanged the set and the second one I received has exactly the same issue! I wonder if there is a problem with the master itself, or if they used a copy protection that makes the disc incompatible with my two readers.
I have this same problem. How is best to resolve this? I'm going to contact Amazon about it, but I'd prefer to just get that specific DVD replaced by Fox rather have to send back the whole thing, but so far I can't find any information from Fox concerning the error. They have so far not replied to the e-mail I sent them through their website. Can anyone help advise me?
Has anyone else who bought it recently had the same problem, as i have two sets, one for me and one as a gift?
If you can't get a replacement from Fox and the problem persists with an Amazon replaceent just order the specific season 8 individual set seperately and keep it around as a backup set its what i did with my old Stargate DVD's once i got the complete box set with Ark of Truth
Hi. Now I tried and I have exactly the same problem with the same disc from Season 8. Nevertheless, I am already waiting for the replacement set from Amazon because of the Season 2 Disc 2 problem. I somehow feel that there will be the same or similar problems again, but I will send feedback as soon as the replacement arrives.
Has anyone ordered and received this set since after christmas and not had these disc problems? I want to order but now don't know whether to hold on to or not as alot of the disc problems seem to be with people who have ordered within the last month or two.
I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk on 10th of November 2008. I just checked and season 8 disc 5 is unreadable, it stops on UK & Ireland copyright notice and doesn't even bring up the menu (player Pioneer DV-410V). There were physical defects on few other discs (season 3 disc 5 and 6) that made 2 episodes out of 4 on both discs lose about 15 minutes of an episode. Stopped watching at season 3 disc 6 and returned it for refund.
I haven't got this set but I've got the individual Season Boxsets and I suspect they are the same discs in the Complete Collection anyway. I had a problem with Season 9 Disc 2; the episode called TRUST NO 1 had lots of problems all the way through. And the end scene just refuses to play. Anyway I got a replacement and it had the exact same problem! Then I got the disc cleaned at a professional DVD store. STILL THE SAME PROBLEM!
Got mine in the end of feb. I just checked Season 8, disc 5, episodes Alone and Essence - no problems. Although the first time I inserted the disc to my player the screen went black, I waited a while and then pressed 'play' - it started to play the first chapter, without showing me the piracy threats or menus first. I then ejected and loaded the disc a few times - no problems.
I also have to truble with Season 3, discs 5 and 6, as Mr. Jaak Poder had.
So far the only worry concerning the X-Files Complete Box I have is that I think I won't have time to watch it until I retire. In some 30 years. Looks good on the shelve, though.
Just received my boxset after waiting a while for the price to drop back to £73. Only noticed this discussion after I placed the order but felt there was a good chance these quality issues had been sorted by now. Er, no - I have the season 8 disk 5 problem exactly as described by previous posters. Tried it in a number of players but same result. Not physical damage, duff recording. Maybe that's why it was £73, perhaps you get a working copy if you buy at the higher price :-)
Wish I'd noticed this discussion before buying... If I had I wouldn't have bothered buying. My copy was unplayable exactly as others have described. That, together with reading about people having problems with other disks prompted me to pack the lot up ready for DHL to take back to Amazon tomorrow. The honest thing for the DVD company to do would be to recall all copies and replace the faulty disk(s) before re-releasing the set...
Not sure if people are going to see this as it is a while since people have posted, but anyway. The easiest way to resolve most issues of this problem (of which I have had many over the years) is to rip and burn the disc - this is legal as long as you own an original and works better with good software. The benefit of doing this is when ripping a disc the drive will read it differently to when it is played, this even works on discs that are badly scratched, then once it has been burned the error is not present 90% of the time. Just a bit of weird techie knowledge from a guy at work but it does work. PLEASE NOTE I have not had this problem with my copy of X Files! but I was looking at getting this box set as a present for a friend.
Here also, I got this same problem. Season 8, disc 5, last 2 episodes refuse to be played back. I think this topic is 'funny'. It seems very likely that one way or another it's a production error, looking at the similarity and extend of the issue. I appreciate Reaper's solution of making a copy of the original, which according to him will solve the problem for the most of us, and one I will definitely try. Yet, I bought a certain product which should be in perfect condition at purchase. Are you also gonna replace a flat tire on a newly purchased car, which was already flat on purchase, yourself? Referring to my 'funny', Fox(tvdvd) should have known of this issue. And with it, they should at very least added (or have the retailers add) a note that there 'may' be a playback problem on some of the discs. And if so, we customers can contact them, etc. I haven't contacted Fox just yet, I want to make sure if this is the only disc which contain errors first. Even if the `make your own copy'-thing works, I still want the (faulty) original be replaced with a good original (like I just pointed out).
God I'm a lucky guy. Not because mine works but I bought the set on April 2008 and haven't watched a single episode yet. I've just checked my disc after seeing this topic and with fear knowing that I'm way too late to request anything. And it worked! I should stop doing that. I always buy DVDs before they get out of stock and watch them after months. I'm not always this lucky of course :(
It's not just amazon. I bought it in hmv on sale and i had the same problem the episodes wouldnt read and with season 3 disc 6 the last 3 episodes skipped and I ended up missing about 20 minutes of each of those three episodes.
Did you ever get this problem sorted? This same disc is causing me problems. Tried copying it with AnyDVD HD. Narrowed the problem down to two VOB files that don't respond half way through copying the individual file. Still trying to find a solution. Thankyou.
I tried to contact foxtvdvd twice without any reply in return. Then I contacted Amazon's customer service and they sorted it out perfectly and quickly. Thumbs up for Amazon! Great aftersales on this particular case.
I'm guessing the problematic disc seems to be on the 2007 release of the box. I was sent a second box which was a 2008 release. The latter had no problems on the particular disc and can be played back just fine. Some others were saying theirs was playing just fine. Would be nice if they could tell us what version of the box they got (year of release). That's all I can say about this.
I have a 2008 release of the set and there is nothing wrong with it. There should not be problems with the 2007 set either because it is the exact same discs from the seperate seasons just put in new cases. Maybe the discs got scratched during packaging or have errors on them which disables them from being read.
