Book Description

3 April 2008 Time Out Seaside: Discover Britain's Coastal Treasures

Reconnect with some of Britain's loveliest scenery, and holiday closer to home.

Time Out Seaside presents the best beaches in England, Scotland and Wales, up close and personal. Craggy coves and sweeping strands, family favourites and surfers' paradises, sheltered bays and secret islands; here are intimate portraits of more than 60 seaside gems, brought to life in glorious colour, with tips on where to eat, drink, sleep and go for a swim. So come on in, the water's lovely.

Snapshots

Holkham Beach, Norfolk

A glorious expanse of sand stretching for miles and backed by woods and dunes, popular with families, dog-walkers and horse-riders. A nature reserve and bird-watchers' haunt that's equally good in winter or summer.

Bedruthan Steps, Cornwall

The epitome of rocky Cornwall, massive volcanic stacks, dotted around golden sand. This one's for the atmosphere and the views. Clifftop paths and steep cliff staircase make it great for walking and exploring.

Luskentyre & Seilebost, Harris, Outer Hebrides

Ethereal. The waters are 100 shades of blue and the swirling patterns of white sands are backed by soft-focus mountains, myriad bays and rock pools. The surf here is gentle rather than pounding. Remote and beautiful.

Southwold, Suffolk

Beach huts and a gleaming new pier (the best one in Britain) coupled with tasteful seafront architecture. A pebbled beach backed by a handsome village with a real air of nostalgia about it. Great for fish and chips.

Practical information includes: how to get there, where to stay (hotels and campsites) and where to eat - all as close to the shore as possible - plus useful facts about shops, ice-cream stalls and activities including boat trips, seal watching and surfing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography and some great choices 27 April 2008

I'm a river, lake and waterfall swimmer really (see the new book on 'Wild Swimming' in the UK) but you can't beat a fantastic beach too.

The authors have picked some of the most spectacular places, some well known, others more secret, and written about them in depth. The practical bits are useful, and the maps for each of the 35 place chapters are very helpful.

The photos are totally stunning, beautifully printed on matt paper. Very nice.

The coverage is a little limited but overall a very inspiring coffee-table guidebook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seaside, the best of Britains Beaches 22 Mar 2009
Top book with great pictures of the best coastal beaches of Britain and places of interest to visit, stay or eat. I purchased it as am coming to Britain in July /August this year from Australia and travelling a lot of the coast both east ,west and south .It's been a great help in planning my trip and would recommend any body interested in good beaches, not just your fish and chippies to get a copy
Regards, David Bray

I agree with the other reviewers in regards to the beautiful pictures and I was pleased to read about some of the unsung Sussex beaches. But i felt that readers just need to be aware its very incomplete. Where is southport? England's classic victorian resort? Where is freshfields/formby point! In my opinion one of the most beautiful beaches you will find. Where is Whitby in North Yorkshire? Or Scarborough to name a few! 2 beaches were named in the whole north of England and both were north east.

It's great that Scotland were included but its not grim up north! Help readers to learn about these other places, please!

5.0 out of 5 stars I do like to be beside the seaside 30 Jan 2013

At the age of 82 and as a late afficionado to the seaside culture,I found this volume totally absorbing. I have already pencilled in several beaches of which I was completely unaware Will I ever visit them all? I doubt it but I'm committed to having a good try. While the North Sea is not the warmest around our coasts, our beaches are undoubtedly among the finest. With a climate as capricious as one could ever hope to encounter, our resorts have adapted and most now provide amenities for whatever the weather decides to throw at them.
"Seaside" is a must for every family with small children, yes, and for those with bigger children!
