No single, reasonably priced, book could hope to cover all of the animals and plants that are found in this region but this book makes a good attempt. As with most decent field guides it is divided up phylogenetically. At the beginning of each section there is an introduction to the phylum with a general description and explanation of some diagnostic features for that group. The most commonly found species are clearly desribed and drawn. This book is ideal for beachcombers, snorkellers and divers with an interest in natural history. The main fault of this generally excellent guide is that the format of the diagrams makes it very unlikely that the reader will be able to confidently identify corals. All proceeds from the sale of this guide go to a charitable trust that will help develop marine science in the area. That in itself makes the book worth buying.

Comprehensive and beautifully presented 2 May 2010
By Meredith Kennedy - Published on Amazon.com
Matthew Richmond's Guide to the Seashores of Eastern Africa and the Western Indian Ocean Islands is essential for anyone who's planning on setting foot near the Western Indian Ocean. The meticulous illustrations and attention to detail are outstanding, and the context and ecology of the East African coast makes it more comprehensive than most guide books.
The broad appeal of this book is that it can be used by Ph.D candidates doing their field work, by local professionals (Department of Fisheries, for instance), by students, or by casual tourists who want to educate themselves. Dr. Richmond provides explanations for everything from the phases of the moon to coral reef community composition to human use of resources. A must-read for everyone living, working, studying or traveling in coastal East Africa.
