Product Description

Product Description

Geza Vermes is the greatest living Jesus scholar. In "The Real Jesus", Vermes, best known for his work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, comments on a variety of contemporary religious themes such as "The Da Vinci Code", Mel Gibson's infamous film "The Passion of the Christ", Benedict XVI's book "Jesus of Nazareth" and the "Gospel of Judas". Informed by the work of a world-class scholar, the short articles in this book open to the general reader the findings of some of the major discoveries of the twentieth century such as the Dead Sea Scrolls. This collection of shorter popular pieces, many of which appeared in "The Times" and other newspapers, makes Vermes' research on Christian origins, the Dead Sea Scrolls and most importantly Jesus the Jew accessible to a wider readership.

About the Author

Geza Vermes is Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies and Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford but continues to teach at the Oriental Institute in Oxford

A disappointment 28 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Having read Geza Vermes' "The Nativity", which is outstandingly good, I was very disappointed by "Searching for the real Jesus". It appears to contain little original work but to consist largely of rehashing of previously published books and papers. It's badly edited - we are told four times (pp 24,29,43,45) that Jesus did the wrong thing in the wrong place at the wrong time - and much of it is blatant advertising of his other books.

Repetitive 11 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I think the problem with collecting articles that were originally written for periodicals is that in a book your reader effectively stays the same throughout and may well be reading at a much faster rate than the original publication schedule. So, while it as acceptable in a magazine article to reprise earlier articles or a opinions, in a collected form it becomes annoying repetition. And it is impossible to do anything much more than basically inform people in these relatively short pieces. There's no room for development. So, while some of the gossip and history surrounding the Dead Sea Scrolls was entertaining, the book as a whole is disappointing.

The redeeming feature is that these articles may make a good way of tempting people into reading some of his other works and that's a good thing. When Vermes has the space to develop his arguments and ideas, he is an entertaining author with an approachable style that doesn't dazzle the reader with the science of his subject.
