Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Searching for the Hows and Whys, the second album from Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, finds young DIY pop star Sam Duckworth taking creative steps outside of the bedroom studio within which he wrote and recorded the entirety of 2006's smart, folk-tinged The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager. On production is producer/composer Nitin Sawnhey, which makes for a slightly fuller, more orchestrated sound. It's not at the expense of Duckworth's essential breeziness and light touch, however, which shines through on the likes of "Keep Singing Out" and "Waiting for the Monster to Drown", sunny concoctions of warm brass and skippy breakbeats. "Better Things" features a cameo by Duckworth's friend Kate Nash, although this one won't prove a crossover single, it being a melancholy number about a one-night stand, heavy with guilt and shame. Nor, probably, will "I Could Build You a Tower"--a sunny enough tune, but one which turns a sad eye to the Middle East, castigating "Islamophobes" and religious extremism ("But the gods they worship will never hear them call"). Weighty themes, but Duckworth pulls it off, just about: not just a studio whizkid, but a folk singer for our times. --Louis Pattison

CD Description
'Searching For The Hows And Whys' is the follow up to 2006's 'The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager Part 1' from Southend's Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Singer/Guitarist Sam Duckworth is the face behind the moniker and a musician that has developed his style from a range of influences and genres, including folk, emo and indie. Clever, uplifting lyrics are backed by catchy and quirky tunes to create an original and accomplished album. Singles include 'Find The Time'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Phase, 15 Mar 2008
By R. King (Westcliff on Sea) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This album is a clear step upwards and onwards from the brilliant debut 'Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager' a fuller sound, with some great lyrics and as ever super guitar playing.
This is innovative and refreshingly different to anything else out there. Since making this superb purchase I have not been able to listen to anything else. It compels me to discover and understand more of what Mr Duckworth has to say on some real hard hitting and challenging subjects.
I would whole heartedly recommend buying or downloading it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sam, i so wanted to love this album (Edited), 30 Mar 2008
By G. Colman (North wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this album very.. plain. Having absolutely LOVED his first, i was looking forward to the second showing more growth, more experiments, more variety. But, as it turns out, it feels to me like more of the same.

I think growth as an artist needs to be about expanding your influences, using more interesting instruments, finding different viewpoints. This is just the old viewpoints shouted louder, as if we hadnt already gotten the message 'consumerism = bad'

On that line, i dont know WHAT was going through his mind with the duet with, *shudders* kate nash.. Why would an artist, who has built the beginning of a very promising career based on a hatred of our media culture, do something with miss nash, the veritable demi-god of topshop skinnys?? I will admit this may be coloured by my personal distaste for Nash, and i would feel less passionate about it if nash could contribute a wonderful voice or a unique passion to the track, but i hear, just like always, an accent, and not the lyrics.

I've been routing for GCWCF since his debut, and, i still am, as, dispite all the downpoints, there is still the trademark Beauty that the first album held hidden in amongst songs such as 'Better things' and 'I could build you a tower' which let the album down.

I want more Diversity in the Next Album.

*Im Adding Another star to this review, last night i saw Sam live in Manchester, and this album comes alive when played in front of you :D (So consider this a 4* review (and a 5* live review), even though it wont let me change it)

3.0 out of 5 stars Politically incorrect, 28 Mar 2008
Musically this is a good album, and recommended for anyone who enjoyed the debut. Unfortunately one song makes it virtually unlistenable for me - 'I Could Build You A Tower' is a strong contender for the worst political song of all time. A typical lyric - 'There's a war going on on our own front door step with the Jews and the Islam-aphoebes [sic], because every time a bomb goes off we get religious probes'. What? Terrible. The whole song is horribly uninformed, and for me it's difficult to take GCWCF seriously after listening to it.
