'Reinventing Axl Rose' is probably my favourite album ever, and so when Against Me! released 'As the Eternal Cowboy' I have to say I felt like I was listening to a new band. That is not to say that it was not an amazing album, but I dont think anyone can deny that the ditsinctive, rough and ready sound of their first album had been in some way polished/diminished. Don't get me wrong I absolutely adore both albums, and I realise now that had the band just tried to emulate their debut, it would have been a disaster and would have gone against the very philosophy of the band. People change, circumstances change and bands change. So with regards to their new release I had no idea what to expect, and thankfully this is probably the best possible frame of mind to have when first listening to 'Searching for a Former Clarity'. The first track 'Miami' actually sounds like it could be from a cabaret show of some kind. Next time someone tells you that singing the word 'Condoleeza' repeatedly would not make a good chorus, then tell them to listent to track 5 on this album. Track 6 'Violence' is slow, which as Against Me! fans will know, is something worth mentioning. However, it is also an amazingly powerful song and had me gripped from the moment Tom opens his mouth. Track 9 will cheer you up and track 14 will bring you crashing back down in a very brutal way. The message is still as bold as ever, the music is exactly what it needs to be and the lyrics (which is what first made the band appeal to me) are as biting and original as ever. If this was an album by any other band I would give it 5 stars but as this comes from a band who to me made the definitive 5 star album I can only give it 4. Please buy this and everything else Against Me! have ever made, as they are a band which has the potential to change the way you listen to music and maybe even the way you live your life, for the better. Peace.
