Product Description

Album Description

* A `lost masterpiece' of 1960s soul, by one of the finest vocalists of his generation, finally gets a long-overdue UK CD release.

* Al Wilson's "Searching For The Dolphins" was one of the first albums to spotlight the work of renowned songwriter Jim Webb. It includes one of the eareliest versions of Webb's `By the Time I Get to Phoenix' and the original version of `Do What You Gotta Do', which Jim wrote especially for Al.

* Also featured is Al's Northern Soul classic `The Snake' -as recently featured on UK TV in a campaign for a new alcoholic beverage Lambrini.

* As well as the complete original "Dolphins" album, Ace's `expansion' also contains all of Al's non album A's and B's for Soul City Records - including another Northern Soul favourite `Now I Know What Love Is' - and his subsequent recording home of Carousel/Bell Records. With the exception of `The Snake', it is believed that none of these recordings have been on UK CD before.

* Al Wilson went on to become one of the must successful Soul hitmakers of the mid 70s with hits like `Show And Tell' and `I've Got A Feeling'. As the recordings on this CD prove, the talent was there long before the big hits arrived and it is a very welcome additon to the Kent catalogue.

In the UK, Al Wilson is best known for the popularity on the Northern Soul circuit of his recording of Oscar Brown's song "The Snake" and none of his later US recordings have meant much. Beyond that very few would have heard of the man as Soul City was a label never released in the UK. However Kent Records (part of the Ace label family) following on a series of articles in "Soul Express" magazine have put this all to right and in addition to the original LP of "Searching for the dolphins" have included the entirety of his Soul City and subsequent Bell records.

And what a masterpiece it is - the involvement of Johnny Rivers (who earlier had had a hit in the States with "The Snake" and was part owner of the Soul City label) is usually a sign of quality in my eyes. In addition, Al's following of River's approach in choosing both a wide cross selection of songs to interpret brilliantly and then being backed by the cream of West Coast studio session men, produces a CD full of gems with not a bum track amongst them. In addition to being a very soulful interpreter (Fred Neil's title track, River's "Poor side of town" and Webb's "Phoenix" & "Do what you gotta do") there is a very wide range of styles to enjoy including some beautifully understated rockers (Fogerty's "Lodi" and Bartholomew's "I hear you knocking").

I just hope this is where the Al Wilson revival starts given it seems the man has continued to perform regularly across the years to date.

I got into this because I heard "The Snake" at a bar, I "shazamed" it on my phone, found out who it was by, and bought this because it had that on it. I have not been disappointed, and The Snake, while an excellent song, is not even the best song on this consistently strong album. Wilson's voice is strong, it's got soul, and he really gets a lot of emotion out of each song. What he's also helped by is the quality of the material. These are strong songs, with interesting lyrics, great arrangements, fantastic musicianship, and a real identity and presence. It's not all "I love you baby, please come back", etc, which so much soul seems to consist of. So many lyrics, it's interesting and refreshing to hear it. So you have top notch music with a strong voice, and not a dud on the album. I'd go so far as to say the album is of a consistent quality higher than most "best of's" by the legends, as they seem to have a combination of classics and filler. There's no filler here. It's intelligent, soulful soul, by people who clearly knew what they were doing. A very strong album, better than I dared hope for when i ordered it on the strength of one song, I have listened to this many times now, and will continue to do so. I can't even pick a favourite on here, it's genuinely an album to put on at the start and listen to all the way through. This comes highly recommended.

I can't really add much to the previous reviewers comments. AW is an accomplished singer with a great voice, the tracks are well presented and I would recommend this album to any "soul" afficinado.
Just a mute point: Johnny Rivers cut an album track called Soul City (a rather montonous work of dubious musical achievement) presumably hence the label name. I have 2 45's with a Soul City label in my collection from the 60's but I must admit the label if it is the same one as the US label did not exist very long in UK.
