A first class collection to honour a top class group,
By Wendy Burton (Tonbridge, Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Searchers 1963-2003: 40th Anniversary Collection (Audio CD)
This double CD is something really special - for the first time a collection covering all periods of the Searchers' long and still-going-strong career, from the Pye, Liberty and RCA days through to the Sire releases and three tracks from "Hungry Hearts", their most recent studio album. In addition to all the well-known hits and a selection of album tracks, it also includes their first demo records on the basis of which they got their first recording contract, and some early live tracks, none of which were issued at the time. But the big surprise is the inclusion of a track that even the most keen Searchers fans have never heard - "For What It's Worth" (a cover of the Buffalo Springfield classic, written by Stephen Stills). They recorded this when they were with Liberty Records in the late 60s, but it was never released, it was believed to have been lost, and it's only recently been found just in time to include it in this excellent collection. The fold-out sleeve notes are excellent - one side is a collage of many of the original singles and album covers, and the other is a comprehensive history of The Searchers, written by eminent music writer and BBC Radio Merseyside presenter, Spencer Leigh. This is not just the usual run-of-the-mill "potted history" - it includes mention of all the 56 tracks on the double CD and shows how and where they fit into the 40 glorious years of their creer. A "must-buy" for all Searchers fans!

BEST SEARCHERS ANTHOLOGY EVER!!!,
By
This review is from: The Searchers 1963-2003: 40th Anniversary Collection (Audio CD)
I recently purchased this "40-year" Searchers Anthology and loved it so much that I soon thereafter ordered another copy for a long-time friend and Searchers fan! I HAD to share this phenomenal collection! The two previous reviewers of this incredible collection were 100% on the money! This set has it all! Supremely well-done liner notes and photos, GREAT rarities (Check out the awesome demos---Sweets For My Sweet indeed!!!....I also love the "live" stuff...Including the Original Emcee introducing the lads as they do a really cool version of "Blowin'In The Wind"...and then a tasty version (a'la Johnny Rivers) of "Memphis").
And the HITS keep comin' of course!!! "Needles and Pins", "Don't Throw Your Love Away"(a personal fave...I recall so well The Searchers doin' that tune on the Ed Sullivan Show), "What Have They Done To The Rain", "Love Potion No. 9", "Sugar and Spice", etc., etc.,..!After such an astounding CD #1,and tons of great songs on CD #2 (including the rare "For What It's Worth"!), what do you do for an encore? I know, let's close the package with the icing on the cake! The last track is a wonderful bonus! If you've never heard "Needles and Pins (1988 version)"...I'll try to describe it...If you can imagine a huge 1988 Rockfest at a sold out football stadium, featuring Van Halen, Asia, Dire Straits, Slade, and The Moody Blues...and out come the Searchers to do a blockbuster set to close the show...then, finally, after two encores, the fans scream and shout for one more number...This BIG version of "Needles and Pins" is what you'd hear!!!(And the only thing missing is the guaranteed 10-minute standing ovation!). Wow! A really cool and appropriate way to tie a 1988 ribbon around the first 25 years of Searchers recordings!(A brilliant "call" by this set's producers!). The production on both CD's is absolutely GREAT! Calling all Searchers Fans!...All of their collections, singles and albums are first rate...but to all of their fans here in Illinois, all over the U.S., to Liverpool, London, and 'round the world...Treat yourself to this absolute gem! P.S.-To the producers of this fantastic package, THANK YOU! WHAT A GREAT AND THOUGHTFUL JOB!I regret that I can only award 5 stars...It's worth 10 stars! And most of all, thanks to the Searchers for the superb music and great times!I am thrilled to share these top-notch Searchers tunes with you from across the pond! (One tiny nit-pik concerning the packaging of many 2-disc sets, including this one...The two discs are REALLY locked into the center "spindle" when new...Be very patient and careful removing the discs so they aren't damaged! I was ultimately successful removing them....while it was an unecessary chore extracting them, man, was it WORTH IT!)

Searchers forever!,

This review is from: The Searchers 1963-2003: 40th Anniversary Collection (Audio CD)
This cd really made me happy. I'm out of work and out of money but now I have this album to cheer me up. My gf from Austria also likes The Searchers even though she is 12 years younger than me. She was born when The Searchers started their career. The Searchers' music is the best I can listen to. I've been a devoted fan since 1965 - "Take me for what I'm worth" got me going although I of course already heard "Needles and pins" - who did'nt hear that - but I still remember January 1965 when I heard "Take me for what I'm worth" the first time. I was completely knocked out. And since then they have become better and better and now they are absolutely the top in my music world. I love The Beatles too but Searchers are one step ahead in my music world.
