Product Description

Product Description
A pangolin is an obscure species of scaly anteater. Prehistoric in appearance, it is about the size of a cat with a long tail, and is covered in large yellowish-brown scales. "In Search of the Pangolin" is a unique potted travel narrative focused on eco-tourism, from the point of view of two eco-tourists, as they search for the beast over a period of 15 years. The book combines wicked humour with passionate and often poignant insights into the natural world and the culture, games and deception of conservation. The book's central focus is to provide insights into the world of eco-travel and eco-travellers. Outlining the grand spectacles and magnificence of the natural world that the traveller seeks out, and exploring the promise of eco-travel (furthering conservation and environmental awareness), the book also addresses the shallow reality (eco-travel is in fact another form of consumption and harms the world that it is seeking to preserve).

5.0 out of 5 stars funny, warm, delightful, 29 Jun 2007
Whether you (like the authors) are an ardent eco-traveller or more of an armchair-traveller, if you have a love of wildlife then you will love this gentle, funny book. The authors really are excellent company - I'd really like to settle down with them beside a campfire somewhere deep in the jungle and hear more stories like these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pangolin - A Lucky Find, 7 Oct 2006
By Judith Price (Adelaide, South Australia) - See all my reviews

As eco-travellers with broader dreams than budget - we save up for the next eco-trip... Reading Das and Jade's book has not only filled us in on the more practical aspects of preparing to travel and what ethical choices we must make to ensure we tread as lightly on the land we are visiting as we can. It also provided genuine laughter, a sense of awe (and not a litlle envy) at where they have travelled and the magnificent wildlife and different environments encountered there. The stories are well told, the occasional gentle witnessing of the pecularities of our own species were handled beautifully. The "decoding" of travel brochures' jargon was hilarious.

Neither of us could put it down and it was an easy days' read. This is a funny, sincere, accurate, thoughtful book which will appeal to anyone interested in travel and wildlife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eco-tourism for the discerning reader, 10 Aug 2006
By Dawn R. Linklater (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews

This book provides a comprehensive review of the whole eco-tourism scene. We are guided by two gifted writers through planning the eco adventure, travel, wildlife viewing, food, accommodation, and other necessities, even buying presents. The book is very funny and I laughed to myself most of the way through, although the tragedy of disappearing species is sensitively treated.

With delightful humour, the authors delineate the various types of their fellow characters in the quest for seeing unusual wildlife. The pathos in the contrast between the views of wealthy tourists and indigenous peoples of the countries the authors visited is beautifully and movingly written.

Highly recommended - a great read!
