Format: Paperback
This series has been around for as long as I have been studying and now teaching History, and as a back-up for teachers it still has considerable value. There are double-page spreads on every topic imaginable, which can be useful as more recent textbooks take a more selective approach and your school's copies may not include all the areas you want/need to teach. The source material, which Aylett pioneered, remains very useful, although the questions set don't always get to the heart of the matter (whether this is the topic itself or the usefulness of the evidence). Illustrations are a strength, and occasionally entertaining, but they are black and white. The best chapters are the mysteries, mentioned in the synopsis. All in all, teachers/student teachers should have a copy for themselves, and parents might find it useful as a resource for their children's homework.

Format: Paperback
Although this textbook was written over twenty years ago it still has a place in the classroom and is relevant to the modern National Curriculum. The book covers a range of social, political and economic issues in a clear and accessible style. The tasks set in the text are differentiated and will stretch most learners.
The text itself is well structured although it can lack interesting stories to grab the weaker learners attention. The best point for teachers in this book are the diagrams. They explain some difficult points and issues with great clarity and I have yet to see another textbook match this standard. For students with literacy difficulties, this book is a god send and will allow them access to a number of demanding issues, especially those relating to the Industrial Revolution.
I would recommend this book to all students of history .... and teachers too!

Format: Paperback
I have been using this textbook for almost twenty years and still have great fondness for it, like an old jumper.It is fair to say that some of the questions are a little basic and they sometimes don't really tease all the ideas out but despite that it is always a book I know I can fall back on for a cover lesson. The pages feel a bit cramped at times but it is overwise excellent. It is very good for the Tudors and early Stuarts but like so many books is less good on the later Stuarts and fades after the Plague and Fire sections. The maps, drawings and illustrations are great for copying into books as a settler. I suspect I will contiune to use this stalwart for a long time to come.
