Product Description

Synopsis
"The Dice Man" told the story of a man who decides to make his decisions on the throw of a dice. Now, 21 years later, this sequel features Luke's son Larry, who is a preppy futures dealer on Wall Street. Rejecting all that his father stood for, he must now try and trace him.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book IN ITSELF., 30 Jul 2002
By Paul Wren (London) - See all my reviews
It is a shame that this book follows such a masterpiece as the Dice Man, as the standards by which it is judged are obviously going to be high. Don't get me wrong, I fell into the same trap, and read the book initially with such enthusiasm and high hopes that it was bound to disappoint. The first book is better, I believe very few will disagree. But that does not mean that the book is not a worthwhile read.

To those that haven't read it, and that enjoyed the first, I say that it is definitely worth reading. The compelling style of writing and the atmosphere Luke Rhinehart creates is very much the same as in the prequel, and I for one was fascinated by the idea of a "dice town", whereby a community of dice followers live together. Seeing this town through the eyes of a level headed guy like Larry Rhinehart was hugely funny and entertaining. I also suggest that you try to see it as a book in itself, as well as a sequel.

To those that have read this book already, and perhaps let it alone after being slightly disappointed with it, I would suggest perhaps reading it again. I certainly found it more enjoyable the second time round.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time to reconsider "The Dice Man", 9 Dec 1999
By David Rolfe (Pasadena, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I feel about "Dice Man" a bit like I feel about Ayn Rand's novels: Both begin in our real world and proceed to carry us towards an alternate (superior?) life structure envisioned by the author. I can't see either vision as a complete blueprint for re-forming my life, and yet the ideas are extremely thought-provoking and powerfully expressed. The orginal "Dice Man" is a great fantasy. This follow-on, set 20 years later, is a (somewhat) more realistic examination of the implications of dice living. True, it's a bit less fantastic than the original, but if you really found the dice notion interesting, you should read this as well. I enjoyed it, both for its ideas and as a novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you roll evens then read it., 13 Feb 2003
By A Customer
This is an entertaining and funny book but I got the impression that Rhinehart wrote it as a money-making spin off following the success of 'The Dice Man' and the novel fails to address any new issues. It is an extension of the original novel rather than something new but if you enjoyed 'The Dice Man' then its worth a read.
