5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful, 23 Nov 2006
By Mr. Graham R. Dudley "graham1382" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Naturally, when one sees a film with Richard Attenborough, it always arouses interest. This film is gripping, accurate and definitely worth a proper viewing.

Kim Stanley plays a manipulative, bullying and self-centred medium (Myra), who craves recognition and status. She concocts a plan to kidnap a child, in order that she may put her powers to good use. However, she is a complete fake and has not mediumistic qualities whatsoever. Her dosile and "hen-pecked" husband (Bill), brilliantly played by Richard Attenborough, does everything she tells him, even pandering to her whims, trying to make her feel better about herself and apparently believing in her fake abilities.

Alas, Myra's plans aren't quite as simple and "innocent" as she originally made out and it soon becomes clear that her ultimate aim is to kill the child. Fortunately, Bill's own sense of morality and decency, prevent him from carrying out his evil wife's intentions and he decides to alert the authorities to the truth.

A brilliant story and a believable script. The black-and-white film does it even more justice and the cast and high standard of acting, merely compliments the drama. A must see!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and unnerving, 3 Oct 2009
By G. Horne (Cheltenham, England) - See all my reviews

I caught this one afternoon on tv and was gripped; the acting is unnerving, and the script and photography first class, and very atmospheric. I found the film frightening as it moved along, and the heartbreak of the Parents whose child the couple have kidnapped could really be felt. Made in 1964, the film is in B/W, and shows a London that has gone now-this adds to the atmosphere of the film , and Ive ordered it on a dvd to keep. You will not be disappointed with this pyschological thriller. First class all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seance on a wet afternoon, 8 Jun 2009
By R. Sykes (Ickenham, Middlesex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I originally saw this film some 10 years ago, and recently stumbled across it whilst browsing on Amazon. This is what firm making is all about - atmospheric settings, superb acting, taut script and clever music.

Richard Attenborough's performance as the downtrodden, but sympathetic husband is outstanding.

This is a film to enjoy, and not just on a wet afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping tragic tale of a sick woman's mind.

This is a very claustrophobic and repressive dark drama that has almost gone un-noticed by the critics since it was made in 1964. Read more
