Book Description

Mar 1991
The 1940 edition of this work was based on original-size photographs of about 9,000 seals taken with a finger-print camera from paintings in the former Palace Collection. This 1966 revised reprint is reproduced in facsimile size and it has an additional supplement of further seals found on Chinese paintings in public and private collections in the USA. It is a reference work for connoisseurs and collectors. The seals are reproduced in red and arranged under each painter in ascending order of size. The name of each painter and collector is followed by a brief biographical note and each seal is deciphered into Chinese script and romanized form.

For anyone interested in Chinese art, where the provenance of a painting can matter more than who painted it, this book is a must. If you can, get the later edition (1966), which includes additional seals from American collections.
