I have never read this author before and I don't usually read thrillers. I was intrigued by the title and once I started to read I could hardly put it down. The story rolls along at a cracking pace and although set in the nineteenth century it seems quite modern. The main character Faro is extremely attractive and his "selkie" background gives him an added mystery, in fact this theme ran through the whole book which gave it, for me, a Celtic otherworldliness, and this made it different from an ordinary thriller. All the characters were vividly portrayed and seemed like real characters, the descriptions clear and concise. as were the descriptions of the scenery and weather. Very accomplished writing, not a word out of place. An excellent story too, and the denouement well worked out. I really enjoyed this book. It was not just a whodunit, these were real people. The love story was touching and poignant. It taught me something about life. I shall certainly read more of this author's books.
