Have been using this NAS for nearly 3 months to back up multiple machines on my network and have not experienced some of the issues other reviewers have had. In fairness, I did not use the backup software provided with the NAS (so cannot comment on it's capabilities) as I already have NovaBACKUP which I have been using successfully for years. The only reason I have given it 4 stars is that I have recently seen "unable to connect to all network drives" when I have booted PC's attached to the network. The usual solution was to recycle the NAS but today this did not solve the issue so I checked the back of the NAS and noticed that the network light was not operational where the supplied cable plugs into the LAN1 port. A little jiggle made the connection light come on so I changed the cable for a Belkin one and all appears to be OK again. I have not (to date) experienced any issue with loss of data or shares on the NAS but then, I have been setting up network shares for over 20 years so I think I know how to do it properly by now. Maybe some of the issues are related to the backup software provided and nothing to do with the NAS itself. It would not be fair of me to state this for a fact as I have not used it but it may be worth checking.
All in all, I believe this to be a very good and cost effective NAS solution and, from the evidence so far, I would not hesitate to buy another one of these should I ever need it.

I should have left reviews for all of the wonderful technology that I have bought in the past.
Having owned a Seagate Blackarmor NAS for a while, and having bent it to my will (made it work in spite of its faults) I decided to buy one of these. I had not used the automatic backup software on the Blackarmor because it repeatedly failed to restore. Scheduled dos batch backups were enough for us.

I now feel very stupid.
This unit is worse.

The Seagate Business Storage NAS does not allow secure passwords (only alphanumeric). If you delete a user then you lose all of your public share data and the users share remains. This I have discovered on day one, and it is a very small part of what just doesn't work.
I do not understand how such a product can make it to the shops. A backup device in Raid 1 is supposed to keep your data reasonably safe. This one deleted all of my backups in the first 24 hours. The Chinese bit (the hardware) seems to work, but the software is atrocious.
Having now visited Seagate's own forum and seen how much worse it is than I could possibly imagine I feel as though I have been fleeced in the literal sense of the word.
If you are thinking of buying one of these then please visit that forum..... please.
If you have recently purchased one then I would advise that you should refuse the delivery. That way you will save the cost of the return postage.

This is the most expensive pile of junk I have ever bought from Amazon. Initial set-up was fine; access to file and folders - no problem. Then on week-two all files and folders disappeared. Could not connect to drive. After a month of email messaging with Seagate I managed to re-establish the drive, but all my files and folders were scrambled or had just simply disappeared after re-mapping the drive. Seagate offered to a 'data-recovery' service for the princely sum of £350. This product is not a solution: Its a nightmare. The Black Armour back-up didn't work. All files and folders containing music and movies (close to 3TB's worth) have been permanently lost and appear to be irretrievable. Seagate don't want to know about it. In fact they stalled me for over two months with generic auto-response emails and of course now I cannot even get a refund from Amazon because it has been over 30 days since purchase date. Of course, you might have better luck with this device but you risk experiencing a major loss as I have unfortunately experienced.

I bought this NAS as both a backup solution for my desktop PC and also as a cloud solution so that I can access the files from my phone/tablet while away from home, however I found that it did neither of these tasks particularly well...

One major flaw with this product is the that the included BlackArmor Backup Software will not real-time sync to a network drive. I've no idea why they would include this software with this drive when it doesn't do this one obvious task. It will only run scheduled full transfers (very slow when you have 1TB+ of data) or a real-time sync with a USB drive (which this drive is not)

Other issues I had:
Transfer speed I was seeing 40 megabits/sec on a 100 megabit LAN
Encryption requires a USB key to be inserted at boot time and does not give a password unlock option
FTP feature does not work outside of your LAN if you are behind a NAT
Could not get WebDAV to work
Web GUI is slow to respond
Noisy fans

However some good points:
Seagate Global Access allows you to access all your content from a web browser
User + group permissions are easy to configure
Built in dynamic DNS feature

I don't usually write reviews for things but this product is so bad, I feel its my duty to warn other potential buyers.

I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and have 14 years experience working in IT. I know what im talking about.

The problems are this:

1. The free cloud solution that they offer isn't free. It comes with a free subscription which you have to pay for when it runs out.

2. The scheduled on / off feature doesn't work. The fans stay on and are noisy. This is not a fault, its how they intended it to be.

3. Backup software is badly written. It fails and is difficult to configure (even for me).

4. The iPhone app simply doesn't work.

5. Very bad documentation.
