This is actually a pretty great device, and the attention to detail of the hardware really is pleasing - the design includes some really nice touches like how well-designed the chargers and other accessories are, showing that a lot of thought went into it.
To get the best out of this device, you probably need to understand how it works, and what the limitations are. Basically, it's a wifi web server with local storage. Getting the files (movies, pictures, music) onto the device is no more difficult than any removable USB drive: you just connect, drag and drop. Once you're done, you disconnect, press the power button and connect to the wifi access point.
The software you install onto the device for playback isn't great - it's basically an AIR version of the web interface, and it launches your video player. The software's a bit clunky and unattractive, and Seagate could do with looking at how other software (like Air Video) is designed. But it does work, and it works across multiple platforms too, thanks to its inbuilt web browser - you can use this with iPad, Android tablet, PlayBook, laptop, or whatever you like. And three devices can connect at once.
The streaming quality is perfect, as long as the format's supported on your device, or you have a player installed to handle your files (for example, AVI/divx files aren't natively supported on most tablets without add-on software). This is easily rectified, but could easily catch buyers out. You can either use software like Handbrake or the Roxio convertor software on your desktop machine to convert your video before transferring, or else install a suitable player on your tablet - such as OPlayer on iPad, or MX Video Player on Android.
Oh, one last gotcha - due to the way the wifi connection works, you're either connected to the device or you're connected to your Internet connection - you can't be connected to both at the same time. For me, this isn't a major issue as it's pretty much a travel device, but it's best to be aware of this.

I was so excited about this hard drive - what a great idea to have a hard drive with its own wi-fi to stream to multiple devices.
Set-up is nice and easy, moving your stuff to the hard drive is simple, and after downloading the app to your device (whatever that may be - I used an iPhone and an iPad) connecting to the hard drive via wi-fi is pretty straight-forward too.
As it has been said in all the other reviews, the biggest let-down is the Seagate app, which is basically not up to scratch. The app is not user-friendly, and I'm talking about the updated version (the first version was even worse). I loaded about 1500 songs onto the drive as I wanted to stream music out of the house, and this caused no end of problems. Pressing "select all" did not, in fact, select all the songs, it managed about 60 before stopping. Trying to move the page down to select more songs, the screen kept bouncing back up to the first song, so I spent ages scrolling down, down, down. I later figured out that I had to sit and wait for about half an hour in order for all the song titles to load before I was able to "select all".
Streaming video is OK, as long as the video is converted into a format that the device can handle (this made me quite annoyed with the limitations of the iPad, let me tell you! It would have been better if the hard drive came bundled with a basic converter, but no, you're on your own on this.
I also had problems connecting to the hard drive after I had updated the app, and it took me a while to find that I had to press the "Restore all settings" button to make it all work again.
So, does it work? Yes, it does, but it really makes you work for it - it takes lots of effort to do what you want to do, but once you have found out how to do it then it works really well. The hard drive has a steep learning curve due to the sub-standard app, so once Seagate updates the app again it should be easier to use.

I've had this for a week now and am really pleased I got it. Most people have a handheld device of some description and storage can be a problem when out and about. This thing takes care of that. At 500GB the storage certainly shouldn't let you down.
I love the whole idea of having your own dedicated hard drive which you can wireless access on the move. In the week that I have had it there has been an app update to my Galaxy S2 and also a firmware update to the device itself. This has made quiet a difference and am glad this was released when it was or this review might lean towards a more negative result! Up until the release of this update the device was pretty slow to navigate. As this is no longer a problem I won't go into it anymore.
I am just about to go away for the weekend and don't intend to carry round a bulk laptop with me. With my Galaxy S2 in tow I have loaded all my documents/vids etc and will be taking this away with me. I have had a plenty of testing this week in practice!
Basically, the hard drive has its own wireless router built in. You connect your device to this access point, load up the app and you have all your files at your fingertips ready to use as if they were on the device. It works like a charm. Super speedy to access (since the update) and really simple to use. There is a downside though, because my devices is accessing this it is no longer connected to the internet, be it by my own home wireless or any 3G connection when out and about. This might prove a problem for people who still need access to the net whilst on the move. For me though, internet access isn't so crucial that an hour or two without it will leave me with palpitations!
The device runs off a battery which for me has lasted anywhere between 3 and 5 hours depending on the level of streaming I do from it. A wall charger and even a car charger is provided in the case. One time this may prove useful is for rigging up films for kids to watch in the car, perhaps on an iPad if you have one.
All in all I think this is a cracking device. There is a big downside though, the price. For 500GB the price is very high indeed and, if anything, this is what will put most people off. How desperate are you for that amount of space on the move. The product itself is marvelous and the idea is brilliant but it does come at a price and that is what you will need to ask yourself. For that price, will I get the use from it.
